Club Stalwart celebrates a significant birthday

A wide circle of family and friends gathered to celebrate with John Joe O’Regan in Smart’s bar last Friday night. Local musicians were primed; JohnT had dusted down the squeezebox and Derek Burke had the guitar ready. John Joe kicked off the evening with a rendition of Dirty Old Town and the night took off from there. Charlie McAllister, never one to stop things, kept the show going before Kenneth Landers belted out the Boys from Old Brigade. Derek took over to ensure everyone hucklebucked the night away. It was a fitting tribute to a great family, community and GAA man.

Junior Round-Up.

Lisgoold’s second string were defeated by Carrig na bhFear on Sunday night in the Junior B football championship. An experienced outfit took to the field and things looked good when everyone managed to complete the strenuous warm-up. After that, it didn’t take long to settle into the game. Matters got tense for a while when Donal O’Leary failed the gumshield inspection but he provided a compelling case for this particular safety gear being surplus to requirements. Brian O’Sullivan and Moss O’Connell established a foothold in midfield and Wayne Kingston, Michael Beirne and Jerry O’Connell were a danger upfront. Two fantastic long range points kicked by Brian O’Leary kept Lisgoold well in the game by half-time. On the turnaround, Lisgoold stepped up and took the game to Carrig and after a fanatic goal by Moss, Lisgoold lead by 5 points going into the last quarter. However, the concession of a penalty, followed by two other late goals saw the lads lose out on the night.

Team: O Hegarty, D O’Leary, S McSweeney, J O’Shea, Kieran O’Shea, B O’Leary, P O’Mahony, B O’Sullivan, M O’Connell, D O’Brien, M Beirne, D Barry, J O’Connell, W Kingston, Kevin O’Shea. Sub: R Coleman.

Lisgoold’s first 15 played Shamrocks on Sunday in a challenge game. It was a high scoring encounter with Cian Scannell scoring 1-03 after being sprung from the bench. Cathal Cashman continued his fine run of form and it was good to see Pa back in action. Overall, it was a useful run out in advance of championship next Fri. The one disappointing point was the injury to Jamie Woods and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Lá na gClubanna – Sunday 8th May, 2016.

Lá na gClubanna will take place on Sunday, 8th May, 2016. This is an event to celebrate the role that GAA clubs play in communities. We will mark this special day by having a day of games, events and fun. Festivities will kick off at 12:30. Entry on the day will be free and food and refreshments will be available. Freestyle hurling in the ball alley could be interesting, so lads start practicing your tricks and flicks.

‘Poo in the Pitch’

The Juvenile club will host a ‘Poo in the Pitch’ fund-raiser on Sun May 8th as part of the Lá na gClubanna activities. We will divide our pitch into squares, and then sell these squares; each square will be given to a ticket holder via a random draw. We then release the cow, belonging to a local dairy farmer into the field, and wherever she “completes her job", that squares owner will win a prize of €500! Your support for this fundraiser will be greatly appreciated.

Special event to remember Thomas Kent

Thomas Kent, a member of the Association through the Dungourney Club, will be remembered at a special event at Kent Station, Cork, Saturday, 30 April 2016 at 11am. The event arranged by the Royal Irish Academy, which they are hosting along with Iarnród Éireann is free and open to all members of the public. Given the status of Tom Kent as one of those executed after the 1916 Rising, and the privileged status his memory commands in Cork city and county, the organisers are hoping for the best possible turn-out on the day.

We extend our sympathies to the Kiely family, Youghal on their recent loss.
