Lisgoold News

01 October, 2009

Our heartiest congratulations to the Ladies Footballers, who made it five in a row. East Cork was heavily represented with the likes of Angela Walsh, Amy O'Shea, Mary O'Connor [Inch Rovers] and Valerie Mulcahy, Elaine Harte [Rockbán] to name a few. With a slight interest from Lisgoold, as goalie Elaine is a niece to Sheila O'Regan [Wife of John Joe O'Regan], so a pat on the back for the ladies who were welcomed to a great crowd last Monday and deservedly so. Also our congrats go to Lorraine O'Driscoll who played at the Cúl match at half-time. Well Done Lorraine. For Lisgoold in amidst of a great weekend for GAA, where Clonakilty bridged a 13 year gap to beat ‘the Barrs’ in a thriller by one point. Our minors played a thriller of their own as they drew the minor football final, our U13 crashed out to Killeagh in the hurling championship, and our junior hurlers are following the footballers’ foot-steps by being on the brink of promotion to Division 1.

MCFC Final Sept 26th

Lisgoold 0-14 (14)

Cobh 1-11 (14)

Fortunately for us, our minors managed to get a draw in a thrilling Minor Football final [which doubled as the league final]. From the first whistle to last, this game had everything. It was a thrill-a-minute a game as both sides went tooth and nail. Cobh got of to a flyer as they raced into 0-5 to 0-1 lead. John Cronin and Alan Conroy got Lisgoold back in the game and we were set-up nicely at 0-6 to 0-4 but disaster struck in the 19th minute when Alan O'Flynn got a goal for Cobh it was a body blow to our lads, but to be fair they bounced back from this setback and managed to close the gap somewhat. Goal chances were spurred but we surely would have raised one or two green flags if it wasn't for the heroics of the Cobh goalie - Edward Walsh. As the short-whistle was blown the score read 1-7 to 0-6 in favour of Cobh.

The second half was another free-flowing affair, with both sides giving it everything. Whatever was said by head-gaffer Noel Connery at half-time worked a treat as 5 points in a row in the first 11 minutes, dragged Lisgoold ahead. John McCarthy gave one of his best displays of the year as did the young John Cashman and everyone upping their game; it looked like this final was Lisgoold’s for the taking. We looked like to have rocked the men from the sea-side town as a great battle followed, points were exchanged and we saw some great defending from Cathal Cashman and Rob Smart. Going into injury time, it seemed we were heading home with the cup as John Cashman hit over what looked like the winner, but Cobh managed to produce an equalizer at the stroke of full-time. A draw was a fair result as both sides gave everything. One must be annoyed by the forward lack of composure in front of goals and a load of easy points were thrown away for chances to go for goal. We live to fight another day, and let’s hope Connery's will be taking this Championship [and league title] back to the parish of Lisgoold.

Lisgoold: A Conroy 0-5, J Cronin 0-4, C Walsh 0-2, J Cashman, J Woods and J McCarthy 0-1 each

Lisgoold: M Conroy, R Smart, C Cashman, R Stack, C Walsh, K Flynn, A Conroy, J Woods, N Kingston, J Cashman, J Cronin, J McCarthy. Sub used A O’Donoghue for N Kingston.

JHL Division 2 Sept 26th

Lisgoold 4-14 (26)

St.Itas 1-3 (6)

This game had one team going for promotion and the other team going for relegation. The score-line reflected this, as Lisgoold brushed past St.Itas with little fuss with some good performances from Kieran O'Shea, Moss O'Connell and Dave Barry [who was well chuffed when his 80 yard shot managed to raise a green flag]. This game was however, written off as a contest as early as the 17th Minute when Lisgoold raced into a 0-7 to 0-0 lead. From here on it was one-sided all the way and when Barry Ahern lashed in the fourth goal in injury time that was that and another two points on the board. This means we must beat Sarsfields in our last game to qualify for the final and more importantly promotion for Division 1.
