Killeagh-Ita’s Juvenile News

Minor Hurlers Get Off To Winning Start

Premier 1 Minor Hurling League Killeagh-Ita’s 6-15, Glen Rovers 0-9

A whirlwind start, which yielded four goals (two lucky, two of excellent quality) in the first ten minutes, laid the foundation for a winning start for our minor hurlers in the Premier 1 league game played in Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Saturday 9th April. Kevin Murphy, David Ogbebor, Andrew Leahy and Killian Treacy were the early goalscorers, but from here on this game was very even with Glen Rovers playing with consistent effort throughout the game, finishing both halves with some fine points. Killian Treacy was our chief scorer, with David, Andrew, Aaron Walsh and Sean Walsh also contributing good points, while Jack O’Rourke and Kevin Murphy mopped up almost every ball that came through the centre of our defence. Bainisteoir Brian Barry was pleased with this opening day win but further challenges lie ahead, with league games against Midleton and Douglas to come before championship against Sarsfields on April 29th. This panel have a busy few weeks ahead.

Team: Fionn McDonnell, Eoin Fitzgibbon, Jack O’Rourke, Emmet Barron, Jamie Landers, Kevin Murphy, Luke Fogarty, Keane Kelly Budds, Christy Coughlan, Sean Walsh, Andrew Leahy, David Ogbebor, Aaron Walsh, Killian Treacy, Shane Kearney. Subs: Padraig Leahy, Dylan Hogan, Richie Long, Barry Motherway.

U15 boys win a thriller in Carrigaline

Premier 2 U-15 Hurling League Carrigaline 3-9, Killeagh-Ita’s 4-8

A cracking game of hurling saw our Under 15 team come away from Carrigaline after 9.30 on Thursday evening last with their first two points of the 2016 hurling league. A sluggish start saw us 2-3 to 0-0 behind after just ten minutes, but once our boys recovered their composure, they began to weather the storm. An enforced change necessitated the move to full-back of Daniel Lucey to replace injured Cian McDonald, and that brought Ben O’Connor into the game on the ’40. Our defenders began to get on top and clear their lines better, with Danny Cunningham and Paul Delaney becoming very effective in their corner back positions. It took Ben a little while to get into the game, but the closing five minutes of the first half saw him add a goal and a point to Olan Broderick’s three earlier points (two from frees) to reduce the deficit at half-time to just one score, Carrigaline ahead by 2-4 to 1-4. A good point from Dara Motherway just after half-time reduced the deficit, but scores were absent for the next ten minutes, before Carrigaline extended their lead with their fifth point. Suddenly, the floodgates opened for us between he 43rd and 48th minute, with Ben and Dara adding further points before three quick goals from Olan Broderick, Richie Landers and Ben put us in the driving seat with twelve minutes remaining – leading by 4-7 to 2-5.  Olan added a further point with ten minutes to go, and we looked to be heading for victory. Carrigaline were in no mood for retreating, however, and they countered with 1-4 in the closing stages, and almost added an injury-time goal but the sliotar whizzed past confident cúl báire Brian Murphy’s post, and victory was ours. Well done to Sean and Ger who made some astute switches on the line, especially at half-time, which helped us to win this game. Next up we welcome Ballygarvan to Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Sunday April 17th.

Team: Brian Murphy, Danny Cunningham, Cian McDonald, Paul Delaney, Owen Cosgrove, Ryan McCarthy, Robert Sinclair, David Kelly, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Oisin McCarthy, Daniel Lucey, Olan Broderick, Darragh O’Connor, Richie Landers, Dara Motherway. Subs: Ben O’Connor, Tommy Noonan, Aaron O’Connell, Ciaran Leahy, Christian Coughlan.

U12s hold on in exciting local derby

Fé 12 Eastern ‘A’ Football League Killeagh-Ita’s 7-3, Kiltha Óg 5-3

An enthralling football game was played between two highly committed teams in Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Saturday afternoon, with a dark black cloud setting an ominous backdrop over Glenane as we awaited the downpour. Thankfully, the precipitation stayed away until after Mary Swayne’s final whistle, which meant our players and supporters went home happy and dry! The wind played a major part in this game, with our boys using it to their advantage in the first half, building up a commanding lead at half-time, 6-3 to 2-1. Colm Leahy, Callum Martin White and Daniel Walsh were the chief scorers, while further out the field David Buckley, Ben Budds, Rory Motherway and Conor Meade all played great games and covered acres of ground. Things were not looking so good for us within five minutes of the restart as the Kiltha boys quickly ate into our lead, leaving us perilously ahead by 6-3 to 5-3 after just eight minutes of the second half. However, some heroic defending and excellent battling throughout the pitch kept the score at that, and Daniel Walsh’s goal gave our boys a cushion which they held on to the end. Well done boys, managers Adrian and Declan were chuffed! Well done to our opponents who also contributed to a very entertaining game.

Team: Dylan McCarthy, Daniel Griffin, Ben Fogarty, Ben Budds, David Buckley, Conor Meade, Rory Motherway, Callum Martin White, Daniel Walsh, Pierse Geary, Danny Fitzgerald, Colm Leahy.

Honours shared in exciting game

Rebel Óg Fé 11 Hurling Killeagh-Ita’s 1-4, Kiltha Óg 1-4

The U-11's had their first hurling league outing last Wednesday night against Kiltha Óg. Despite very poor conditions the team put in a great performance. Team captain Ruairi Mackey led his team admirably from goals while full backs Diarmuid Buckley, Daniel Griffin and Dylan McCarthy did great work keeping the Kiltha Óg forwards on a short leash. The half backs of Piece Geary and Liam Considine worked tirelessly and halted many attacks. Our midfielders Colm Leahy and Jack O'Connor were unstoppable, sending quality ball into the hardworking forwards of Eoin Kelly, Liam Óg Power and Martin Power. The latter two were playing their first game in the Killeagh colours. The team was very ably supported by four of the U-10's; Michael Doherty, Harry Connon, Fionn Murphy and Sean Meade.

From the first puck of the ball, Killeagh were up for this battle, with excellent hooks, blocks, kicks, hard-hits, saves and great scores,. With rain threatening, Kiltha Óg increased the pressure on our lads, but Killeagh stood strong. Those 15 players each deserve Man of the Match for an outstanding performance in terrible conditions. (Congratulations to Liam Óg Power for his first goal in his debut match!)

The final score was Killeagh 1-4, Kiltha Óg 1-4. Well done to all. Keep up the good work lads. Special thanks to all the parents for their continued support and to Paudie Kearney for refereeing a great game.
