East Cork JAFC, 01 Apr. Lisgoold 2-08 vs Aghada 0-13 (after extra time).

Connery inspired fightback sees Lisgoold advance.

Two early second half goals by Noel Connery inspired Lisgoold to a gritty win against Aghada in Rostellan last Fri night. Setting aside some poor league performances, it was clear from the off that Lisgoold meant business. As usual, John Cashman’s kicking radar was on as he finished the first half with 4 points. Strong support play from half-backs Noel Connery and Kieran Cashman, who also kicked a fine point, drove Lisgoold forward in the first quarter. However, as the half went on, Aghada began to get a grip in midfield and provide their mobile forward line with quality ball which they used efficiently to take a 0-08 to 0-05 lead at half time. On the resumption, up stepped Noel Connery to put his stamp on the game with 2 terrific goals. The first, after 32 minutes, was a cool finish after a rampaging run and brought Lisgoold level. Aghada responded with 2 points, but a second goal on 46 minutes after another determined run put Lisgoold ahead 2-06 to 0-11. Cathal Cashman and Brendan Flynn were working tirelessly in midfield and substitute Barry Ahern proved an outlet for some long balls, which he used cleverly. Scores dried up for both sides until Aghada pointed on 55 minutes to bring the game into extra time. The sides scored a point apiece in the first period of extra time to leave it 2-07 to 0-13 and there was only to be one more score in the game. Noel was unlucky not to have scored a third goal after finding himself with the goalkeeper to beat after being slipped a terrific pass from John Cashman. But fittingly, the source of the winning point was a long range free kicked by John.

Great Easter Camp.

Our first Easter Camp was run over 3 days last week. The camp would not have happened without the excellent planning by Keith McSweeney. Over 50 kids attended the Easter Camp and practiced their hurling and football skills. Highlight of the camp for most kids was the attendance of Cork inter-county hurler Damien Cahalane who stood in for penalty shoot outs, passed on his advice to the kids and signed autographs. A special thanks to an excellent group of mentors from the minor panel who worked tirelessly to ensure the kids had three fun-filled days. These mentors were Sean Power, Caolan O’Brien, Fionn Morey, Eoghan Young,  Liam O’Shea,  Caoimhan O’Shea; Robert Williams and Sean Whelan. Thanks also to Shane Supple, Games Development Administrator who also visited.

U12 trip to Croke Park.

Our U12 panel had a trip of a lifetime last week playing in Croke Park. We will have a special feature on this trip on next week’s notes.
