Under 21 come up short at the final hurdle

East Cork under 21 B Football Championship Semi Final v Fa O’Neill’s Venue Rostellan

Glenville 0-6

Fa O’Neill’s 2-6

Our under 21 footballers came up short and were very unlucky to be denied a place in this year east cork final after a might battle against a strong and Tough Fa O’Neill’s side. They say goals wins games and certainly this was the case when a late flourish of goals from Fa O’Neill’s earned them a place in the East Cork final. Throughout the years from under age to adult level in league or championship Glenville and Fa O’Neill’s always served up to be a great encounter and there would be always be very little between the sides at the end. Both teams came into this semi-final in great form for Glenville we had wins over Glenabower Rovers and Erin’s Own to get to the semi-final while the opposition had wins over Carrigtwohill and Carrig Na Bhfear. So it all came down to this 60 minutes of football the two best teams in the competition up against each other and a place in the final against st Coleman’s or castle Marta awaited for the winners played in perfect conditions and played in the beautiful appointed Aghada venue it was the men from the ballmacoda side to register the opening score. Straight away at the other end of the field on form Josh Cooke kicked over the equalizer score both teams went on to trade points at both end of the field our score came from PJ Denhenny. O’Neill’s were always dangers going forward  but our experience defence kept them at bay as we forced them to kick from impossible angles and by the fifteen minute mark we took the lead courtesy of a Josh Cooke point but straight away O’Neill’s hit back and it over the leveller to leave the score at 0-3 to 0-3. It was a very even first half with both teams going at it full belt man for man with some excellent display of blocking and fast movement of the ball we finished the half strong with two points from Josh Cooke to leave the score at 0-5 to 0-3 at the interval in Glenville favour so it was off to the dressing room we went for half time team talk. In the second half O’Neill’s purple patch began to kick in as they went in serge for the score to bring the gap down to the minimum and we had to wait for fifteen minutes for that to happen but straight away at the opposite end of the field from a 45 Aaron Ricken increased our lead back out to two points. From that moment we took control of the game as went in search for more scores but bang on the 50th minute mark from looked like a brilliant should challenge by Denis O’Farrell but deemed by the ref as a Dilbert body collide earned him a black card his replacement James Gowen made an immediate impact and it shot from 30 yards out dipped low causing the Fa O’Neill’s keeper to pull off a brilliant save but the cause got from bad to worse for Glenville as Aaron Ricken picked up a very Harsh Black Card. So it all came down to this the final five minutes with the Glenville holding a two point lead but concentration slipped that allowed the Fa O’Neill’s player get in for a goal and that was followed by two quick points as we now found ourselves down by three points. But Glenville never gave up as we went in search for a goal that would take it to extra time but right at the death Fa O’Neill’s would add the second goal to insure their place in this year’s East Cork final. Disappointment from all our lads put from 1to 15 all played their heart and soul out and wore the black and amber jersey with pride. Our under 21 season campaign has come to an end but we still have the junior and intermediate football championship to look forward to over the coming weeks.
