Junior A Football Championship: Lisgoold 0-10 vs 2-06 St. Catherines.

It was a case of ‘goals win matches’ as Lisgoold lost out to near neighbours St. Catherines in the preliminary round of the JAFC last Fri, 18th Mar played under lights in Ballynoe. An early penalty helped St. Catherines establish an early 1-1 to 0-1 lead. Despite losing Eoin to a black card, Lisgoold began to settle into the game with Caomhan O’Shea and Kieran Cashman excelling in defence. Up front, John Cashman kept the score board ticking over and by half-time, Lisgoold led 0-07 to 1-03. However, another Saints goal soon after the restart, followed by a brace of points proved decisive on the night. Despite the loss, it was a decent performance from Lisgoold, and they will benefit from this outing as they prepare to face Aghada in the next round.  Team: C. Cronin, A. Donovan, E. O’Sullivan, Caomhan O’Shea, K. Cashman, J. Woods, C. Scannell, C. Cashman, B. Flynn, P. Leahy, C. O’Brien, K. Barry, Ciaran O’Shea, J. Cashman, C. Smart. Subs used. B. Whelan, B. Ahern, C. McCarthy.

Junior A County Hurling League: Lisgoold 3-14 vs 3-11 Freemount.

Lisgoold emerged victorious from a dogged Junior Hurling County League game versus Freemount on Sunday Mar 20th with a final score of Lisgoold 3-14 to Freemount 3-11.  John Casman, who had a man of the match performance, opened proceedings with a point from play.  Lisgoold and Freemount traded point for point for much of the first half until our goalie, Sean Power found John Mc Carthy with a puck out and John sent a long ball to Mossie O Connell from which, without ceremony, he sent straight to the back of the net.  A second goal quickly followed when Bill Whelan dispossessed the Freemount corner back and Bill finished with a ground strike to the back of the net.  The half time score was Lisgoold 2-7 to Freemount 0-6.  In the second half Freemount came back at Lisgoold but John Cashman did enough from play and from frees to give Lisgoold a safe margin throughout the second half. Our new players for 2016, Sean Power in goals and Caolan O’Brien at centre field had very good games with Caolan scoring a point in his debut game. Our full back line Kieran Barry, Eoin O’Sullivan and Cian Scannell were on top of the Freemount full forward line throughout the game.  Our half back line was solid with Charles Smart having a fine game and made numerous long clearances throughout the game.  Cathal and Ciaran Cashman were solid under dropping balls throughout the game as always.  Peter Leahy carried his fine form from football into the hurling game and had a busy day at centre field in the first half and corner back in the second half.  Ciaran O’Shea and Caomhan O’Shea had solid games and saw plenty of ball throughout the hour. In the second half, Brian Clifford and Bryan O Sullivan were introduced and both acquitted themselves very well.  Jerry O’Connell also came into the forwards in the later stages of the match and he quickly let the opposition know he was on the pitch! Manager and selectors Dermot McCarthy, Jim Geary and Barry Ahern were very pleased with the performance and result for this opening game for 2016.

Rebel Ōg East Fe 14 C Football

19th Mar: Lisgoold 3-07 vs 2-09 Shamrocks

The U14 football season kicked into life on Saturday afternoon, with our first match of 2016 against Shamrocks. A little bit of local history made with the dressing rooms of our new building getting their first use and great to report that the home dressing room was a winning one, even if it was by the narrowest of margins. We got off to a great start going two points in front, but it was a match that was to be tight all the way through, with very little separating the sides at any point. Jamie Browne worked his socks off in midfield and the attitude from all of the Lisgoold boys was excellent, in particular Daniel and Fionn (man of the match). Just coming up to half time with a high dropping ball into the square from Cormac, Fionn struck for his first goal, to leave us one point up at half time. The second half started at a frantic pace with Shamrocks, getting on top in the early stages and pulling ahead, with Shane in goal pulling off some great saves. As the second half wore on, we were creating more and more chances with Mark, Izaak, James, Diarmuid and Sean leading the forwards and Eoin, Jamie S, Johnathan, Dan and Piaras, holding the back line firm. After hitting the woodwork, Cormac dropped another ball into the square and again Fionn had the ball in the back of the net. A few points were exchanged and it ended on a score line of Lisgoold 3-07, Shamrocks 2-09
