CASTLEMARTYR EDGE OUT RUSSELL ROVERS IN FEROCIOUS BATTLE

CASTLEMARTYR..........................0-15

RUSSELL ROVERS........................0-13

Although the Rovers clapped the recently crowned East Cork champions on to the field, there the civilities ended, as Castlemartyr learned what it’s like for the hunter to become the hunted in last Saturday evenings JHL Div 1 clash. To Castlemartyrs credit, they were able to give as good as they got throughout the hour, especially so soon after celebrating last week’s historic win, and were very happy to escape out of Shanagarry with 2 points safely secured, and another step nearer to retaining their Div. 1 status for 2010.

In a very evenly matched first half the Reds led by 8 points to 6 at the short whistle, with Brian O Tuama certainly looking razor sharp in the right corner, notching 3 sweet points.

The second half was an absorbing battle with neither team willing to take a step backwards. Peter Horgan especially was revelling in the tough exchanges, and drove on his team mates around him. Evan O Keeffe was prominent also, and did very well from placed balls in the absence of Jimmy Smiddy, which was the only difference between the sides at the finish .Brian Barrett deputising for David Fleming in goals gave a superb display stopping three excellent goal bound shots and will have given the selectors a pleasant headache for the rest of the season. Eddie Clifford at wing back set down a marker also, with plenty of relieving clearances, and will also be pushing hard for a place in the half back line after this display.

With 10 minutes to go both sides were deadlocked at 13 points apiece, but Castlemartyr added on two crucial scores to edge ahead with 5 minutes to go. The Rovers finished the stronger but could not breach the Reds rearguard where Brian Barrett and Ollie Smiddy made goal line clearances to save the day.

TWO MONTH DRAW

Following the heroics of the last few weeks, the two month draw was put on the long finger, but as the bills are now mounting up, the show must be put back on the road immediately. It’s only 50 euros in total for the two months, with a top prize of 1500 euros and over 7000 euros in prize money overall. Please support this worthy cause as it is our main fundraiser, and as you can imagine it will cost even more to run the club this year due to the extended run in the championship.
