Lisgoold News

09 September, 2009

It's D-Day on Thursday as our footballers take on Cloyne in the JAFC semi-final. This will be yet another titanic battle, under lights in Ballynoe. We wish manager Donal Woods and his management staff the very best, as Foley’s Army are 60 minutes away from the JAFC Final... Our Under 16 Hurlers came up short in the replay of the hurling final. Also our minors will know come Thursday [depending on the result of the football] when they will play Sam Maguires in the quarter-final of the County Championship. It was ecstasy for Castlemartyr as the captured the Jamsey Kelleher cup for the first time since 1964. A fantastic achievement and it a bit of an upset was caused as they defeated red-hot favourites Sars by 0-23 to 2-11. It was also great to see their great servant Jimmy Smiddy finally getting his Junior A medal after years of service, all in C.L.G Liosgcúl would like to give our Congratulations to Castlemartyr and wish them the very best in the county campaign. Tipp just fell short of topping the cats [albeit in controversial circumstances] in an classic all-Ireland final, also we would like to wish the cork senior Camogie team the very best as they will try and capture the county's 24th All-Ireland title against Kilkenny next Sunday. Good luck ladies.

U16 C Hurling Final Replay Sept 4th

Lisgoold 1-9 (12)

Carrignavar 2-11 (17)

Unfortunately for us, it was agony yet again as our young hurlers just failed short at the final hurdle by 5 points… Unlike the drawn encounter [3-7 to 2-10] this contest was more packed with tension than skill as both sides seemed to have frozen in the first 20 minutes or so for neither side wanted to give an inch. Breakthrough came in 21st minute when Carrig struck for the goal a long-ball in was batted out by goalie bill Whelan [who by all accounts had a superb match] but loose marking enabled the Carrignavar forward to lease a good shot into the net. Instead of settling the issue this opened up the game and some lovely scores were taken then by John Cashman [frees], John McCarthy and a superb point by Matthew Connery. Aidan Barry from Sarsfields [who handled the game well] blew the short-whistle and the score read 1-6 to 0-6 in Carrig's favour.

The second half was a much more free-flowing affair, with both sides fighting tooth and nail. Captain John McCarthy was leading the way with some great defending as was Cathal Cashman, as we were repelling every attack. It was from here Lisgoold seemed to have turned the screw, when John Cashman [who scored 1-7] raised a green flag in the 38th minute. This looked to have rocked Carrig and great battle followed, points were exchanged and it seemed extra time was going to be needed as we entered the final 10 minutes, 1-9 apiece. However with 6 minutes to go Carrig got a great long-range goal and that seemed to be that. Lisgoold did their upmost to regain the lead, but time ran out, as two more points sealed a great win for the boys from Carrignavar. It was hard luck to our lads who did their best and gave their all. Mary Buckley of the East Cork Board presented the cup to Carrignavar and we wish them the very best in their county campaign. As for our lads, heads up, keep it going, your day will come.
