U16 County ‘C’ Hurling Final
Lisgoold 2-20 (26)
Donraile 1-8 (11)
At Fermoy
Sat 22nd August 2015

A historic day was had, last Saturday afternoon as our Under 16’s captured the club’s second county title with a wonderful display of fast, attacking, skilful hurling. In this writer’s opinion it was one of the best ever produced by a juvenile team so far in this club, as they cut apart Doneraile from north Cork. Given the rain and winter-like conditions (even for August!) it was tough for our lads, but that didn’t stop them producing a fantastic performance over the hour.

However, it could have been quite different as our opponents could have easily raised two or three green flags. However, the towering presence of Cian Healy and keeper James Murphy assured this wasn’t to happen. After that tough ten minute spell in dizzily conditions (0-4 to 0-2 to Lisgoold) we kicked ahead. Jason Hegarty, Liam Stack, Cathal Hickey, Sean Whelan all did their part as the played top drawer stuff from start to finish. Ross Shanahan got our first major after wonderful team play, a long range ball was batted down and Ross was there to finish. This was followed at the end of the half as Jason Hegarty banged in a second. This came after wonderful and expert cross-field pass from Liam O’Shea, and Jason did a mazy little run before getting goal number two. Doneraile tagged a few more points as the rain poured down to leave it at 2-9 to 0-5 to Lisgoold. As they trooped off for the half-time Jaffa there was rapturous applause from our passionate support.

The second half Lisgoold simply did not leave Doneraile off the hook and they tagged on point after point. The whole squad were focused not to leave this title behind like what happened to the 2013 group. Lisgoold continued their dominance with great style and with the likes of Rob Williams, Eoghan Ruane, Aidan MacDonnacha and Liam O’Shea putting the foot on the accelerator, there was nothing stopping them. Doneraile goaled at the end of the match but it was nothing more than a consolation as Lisgoold deserved to win this match. The team were superbly drilled and credit must go to the backroom team of Paul, Kevin, Donie & Brendan have to be saluted in having a superb, organised, united and focused squad able to produce a great performance.

There has been a lot of great players past through our ranks in recent years, most have gone on to represent cork at some level and hopefully will bring silverware to the parish in later years. Last Saturday, we saw another batch come through and hopefully will go on to elevate the club to further success in later years but one player did outshine them all in this game. Whilst the team as a defensive unit kept it simple, and our forwards shooting display was brilliant, the performance shown by Liam O’Shea was simply brilliant. Heavily involved in the two goals, fourteen points (seven from play, no wides), got his team mates in the game when needed, showed continuous encouragement and leadership all through the encounter. In this writers opinion, it was the best display given by any Lisgoold player at any grade ata , also it was quite fitting he was to captain such a fantastic side.

Rebel Óg Officer Jim Healy (Father of selector Brendan and grandfather of full-back Cian) was at hand to present the cup to Captain Liam O’Shea. The celebrations lasted all weekend no doubt, as another county title was secured by the blue and gold. This progressive, ambitious, highly active juvenile club just grows in strength from year to year.

U14 ‘B’ East Region Hurling Q-Final
Lisgoold 2-10 (16)
Passage 1-7(10)
At Passage
Sun 23rd August 2015

A Titanic battled was played as our young blues travelled to the hosts and sealed their passage (excuse the pun), to the semi-final against Aghada. The first half saw on a splendid pitch, a hard battle between both teams, as both defences were on top. Scores were hard to come by and with Cathal Hickey, Mark Hegarty, Declan O’Brien, Sayef Ziad, Izaak Walsh and Robbie Kinnane steeping up to the plate we were doing well. The only blot in our copybook in this period was a goal in the 26th minute as a break-away attack saw our defence outnumbered and allowed passage to raise the green flag. At the short whistle it was 1-4 to 0-4 to the hosts.

The second half however saw Lisgoold take control of the game and with poise and class took the lead in the 35th minute as lovely goal from Oisin Shanahan brought us ahead 1-5 to 1-4. From here it was a ding-dong battle as the pace of the game increased, so did the chances but they weren’t being taken (for both sides). Passage edged in front in and went looking for the kill in the 46th minute as they started another attack. However a wonderful save by Evan Manning prevented Passage from going further ahead and gave Lisgoold momentum coming into the final ten minutes. A save that even our junior custodian Ciaran, was quite impressed with, especially by the young keeper’s reflexes.  We pressed ahead with points from Oisin and a wonderful long-range point from Cathal gave us a two point lead. The tie was won when Oisin displayed wonderful trickery and class to conjure up a second goal to finish passage off. There was a bit of injury time to go through but our lads held on, to march on to the semi-final.

Under 21 ‘B’ Hurling Championship Quarter-final
Castlegoold 1-14 (17)
Watergrasshill 1-15 (18)
At Castlelyons
Tues 18th August 2015

Last Tuesday night our under 21 squad took on the challenge of Watergrasshill in the quarter-final of the east cork championship. Played in a lovely Castlelyons venue we were treated to an exhibition of hurling from both sides, although the match (especially the first half) was riddled with frees – it wasn’t really a dirty game. The first half overall was a decent game with a goal for either side John Cashman getting ours. Liam Martin, Cian Hayes, John Cashman, Andrew Donovan and Rian Hogan were doing well for Castlegoold. Even though we were missing Cathal Cashman at full-back we were holding well. The Hill however were a lot sharper and quicker and trooped off at half time, it was 1-9 to 1-6 to the Hill.

The second half saw the reasonably sized crowd treated to a splendid contest in which both sides traded points at the start with Hill poised to run away with it after a flurry of scores to make 1-13 to 1-8 with 18 minutes to go. However a stunning comeback from our lads saw them outscore, out fought and out-thought their opponents 0-6 to 0-1 to tie it up at 1-14 apiece. We had spurned several chances to take the lead, however even a golden opportunity to raise a green flag but we failed to take it. The hill snatched the lead in injury time and even though we had a last minute free that seemed to be over but it was declared wide by the officials and that was that. It was a very brave performance from our lads but they had to resign to a one point defeat, and their exit from this year’s championship
