Minor Hurlers Win East Cork Championship.

Cobh 2-06 Sars(ii)1-05.

The Cobh minor hurlers beat Sars in a thrilling final played at Rostellan on Friday last. The meeting of two very evenly matched teams meant that the result was in doubt right up until the referee blew the final whistle. Sars scored the first point but Cobh responded with a free from team captain Adam McCarthy and a splendid effort from Gavin Fitzgerald when a clever Martin Reidy pass set him up. Sars hit back with a goal and a point that Cobh cancelled out to leave the sides level at 1-02 to 0-05 at half time. Cobh started strongly in the second half with Dave Devlin giving a superb display along with his half back colleague Kevin Doody, but unfortunately they failed to register their dominance on the scoreboard. Sars came back into the game midway through the second half and went into a two-point lead, which, in this game, seemed to be a sizeable margin. The Cobh management team responded by switching Conor Farrell to midfield and pushing Adam McCarthy up front. Almost immediately this change paid dividends as a long delivery from Farrell was latched onto by McCarthy and he dispatched the ball to the net to put Cobh in front by one point. With the game still on a knife-edge Gavin Fitzgerald won a ball outside the 45metre line and took off on a solo run which ended with him finishing to the net from the edge of the small square to give Cobh some breathing space. The defence held out for the last five minutes and the Cobh players, mentors and supporters greeted the ref’s final whistle with great celebrations. Cobh now move on to contest the County championship in the next couple of weeks. Well done to all involved with this team for making it such a successful year and particularly to the players who gave their all in the effort to win this championship for Cobh.
