J B Hurling Championship

Castlelyons  0-11   Ballinacurra  0-13

We were defeated by Ballinacurra in the first round of the East Cork JB hurling championship last weekend. This was a repeat of last years epic encounter, but this year , scores were harder to come by for both teams with defences on top throughout. Playing with the wind in the first half we had the perfect start when C Cotter scored a long range point from midfield. Both sides found scoring from play difficult with M Spillane scoring 4 long range frees and R Fenton with a late point to leave Ballinacurra leading at half time by 0-08 to 0-06 with they having scored 6 of their points from frees.

Second half was again very even with some great performances from our back lines. S O Sullivan pulled off a great save to deny Ballinacurra a certain goal and M Spillane added 3 more points from frees but we could not reduce Ballinacurra's lead . P Mahon, who put in a great performance all through, scored a great point to reduce the deficeit to one point but Ballinacurra added 2 more points to extend their lead. With time almost up Castlelyons could not get in for the goal we required with a point from M Spillane being the last score of the match. A great effort put in by everyone that played and we now go on to play Erins Own in Round 2.

Team: S O Sullivan, L Moroney, B O Connell, M Murphy, C O Neill, D Varner, S Fenton, D Sexton, C Cotter (0-01), B O Donovan, P Mahon (0-01), M Spillane (0-08  7f), B O Donovan, R Fenton (0-01), M J Dorgan.

Subs: N McAuliffe, C McGann, S Bargery, D Kenny, D Beausang.
