Under 16s get back on the road with win in Cobh

The Junior Cert is finally over and players and mentors alike celebrate as the punctuated Under 16 hurling season is resumed once again. Our team travelled to Cobh to play their third league game of this year’s campaign and came away with another two points courtesy of a 7-11 to 2-14 victory. This was a strange game as our boys went for the jugular early on a la Kilkenny, and led by the incomprehensible score-line of 6-2 to 0-3 after just fifteen minutes, with four of those goals coming in four crazy minutes leading up the quarter hour. Richie Long, Sean Walsh, Keane Budds, Padraig Leahy and Jamie Clifford were the goal scorers, with Richie adding another just before half time with a cheeky Joe-Deane type flick to a long delivery. Despite this goal fest, Cobh were playing a very good brand of hurling also, and scoring some fine points. They raised a green flag from a goalmouth scramble after Fionn McDonnell had initially saved a 1:1 penalty. It left the score at half-time 7-4 to 1-9, with the job not yet complete. The lead and

the aid of the wind was an advantage and an opportunity for management to make a few changes, with Richie Landers, Cian McDonald, Jack Wyse, James Kent and Andrew Foley all joining the fray in the second half. Cobh continued to whittle away at our lead during the first half of the second half, and added a second goal to but eventually our point scoring rate improved and we added seven more before PJ Ahern blew the final whistle. Next up is a St. Catherine’s league game at home on Monday 29th, followed by the championship first round against Castlelyons on Sunday July 5th.

Team: Fionn McDonnell, Darragh Geary, Dylan Hogan, Kieran Daly, Barry Motherway, Jamie Landers, Shane Kearney, Keane Kelly Budds, Daniel Hickey, Padraig Leahy, Sean Walsh, Richie Long, Adrian Galvin, Jamie Clifford, Olin Hennessy, Richie Landers, Cian McDonald, Jack Wyse, James Kent, Andrew Foley, Liam McCarthy, Olan Broderick.
