Junior A Hurling Championship Dungourney 2-16 Cobh 3-11

A Great win on Saturday in the first round of the Junior A Hurling Championship. Played in Clonmult Memorial Park Midleton wet and windy no one minded the weather as we were treated to an enthralling hours hurling.  Eight points down with fifteen minutes to go the lads dug deep showed savage heart and immense workrate to grind out the victory in the end.

Cobh were first on the scoreboard inside the opening minute pointing from play, Shane Hegarty replied with a point from play. Cobh raised a white, Shane responded with another point after some great work by Martin Hennessy. The game was nip and tuck Cobh pointing again with Ryan Denny scoring a free in response. Cobh pointed again and added a goal soon after. The response perfect Jack Griffin Niall Motherway and Martin exchanging passes before Niall scored a beauty of a goal 20 metres out straight into the top corner keeper no chance. Cobh won a penalty a minute later but the shot went wide, Niall pointed again Shay O Gorman got his name on the scoresheet soon after with a point. Cobh added two more points to their total from frees. Shane got his third point from play and turned provider a minute later supplying Bill Ahern who slotted over. Cobh got one more point just before half time leaving them a point up at the short whistle. Cobh played with the aid of the breeze in the first half.

The start to the second couldn’t have gone worse for us Cobh came out all guns blazing and added a goal and three points. Martin plucked a high ball from the sky drove towards goal and was unlucky to see his shot go over the bar for a point. Cobh hit us again with another goal putting us eight points in arrears. Shane pointed again with Cobh striking back with a point of their own. Fifteen minutes to go and eight points down there was no sense of panic and we kept tipping away Ryan firing over three frees in a row. Cobh pointed again leaving us six down with ten to go. The lads really dug deep and the hard work they put in to start the year began to show hooking, blocking fighting for every ball as if their lives depended on it. Ryan continued to punish any fouling pointing three more frees, Niall scored another point from play. Two minutes into added time Martin fielded a high ball again offloaded to James McCarthy and he rattled the net putting us in front for the first time in the game. Ryan pointed another leaving us two up and despite one or two nervous moments we held on for a great result.

Great Credit to the lads on a great comeback win. Some awesome performances from back to front Mark Hegarty in corner back, Jack Griffin hurled a pile of ball. James was awesome at midfield hooking blocking and winning frees. Niall Motherway was brilliant on the wing winning puckouts and scoring a screamer of a goal. Martin was a terror all night causing endless problems at full forward. Ryan Denny gave a masterclass in freetaking all night. Defibrillator Course

On Saturday the 27th of June we held a Defibrillator and CPR course in Clonmult Old School. It was facilitated by East Cork Rapid Response. A total of thirteen people took part and it was great to see young and old attend. With one Defibrillator in the club and more coming to the community it is invaluable to have people trained in their use.
