East Cork Oil Hurling Rd 1
Sarsfields 1-18 Russell Rovers 1-14
Following a tough combative hours hurling, Sars proved the victors in a balmy sun splashed Lisgoold venue.
Sars opened the scoring with a couple of long range pts from the wings before Josh Beausang opened our account from 2 quick dead ball. Sars were playing now with more purpose and dominated for a 15' period and were further ahead when their centre forward rifled a goal on 18', two nice Kevin Moynihan pts reduced the arrears to 5 pts, some errant shooting from relative score able positions were spurned at this point, but Sars were reduced to 14 on 22' when a late pull garnished a red from the referee. This spurred us a bit with 2 more pts coming before the half whistle.
A few positional switches at start of second period to counter the extra man resulted in us getting the power back some bit, Jp Ivers now at centre back with Dan Moynihan sweeping, saw pts from Josh, Kevin Tattan and Chris Ruddy, sub Eoin Mcgrath made an immediate impact with a pt from play and then setting up Josh for a well taken goal, now only 4 pts between us going down the stretch we made it a puck of a ball with Kevin Moynihans 3rd score, however it was the lead that Sars had built up that lead to them always holding sway, and late on the teams were reduced by 1 more each as a melee ensued, with Sars getting the final pt to make it a 4 pt win.
Overall Rovers should feel they had a serious chance of causing an upset, but some poor shot making decisions and errant wides cost in the end, now it's into the pot for rd 2 on Saturday night in Midleton
