Although ahead from early unanswered points, St. Catherines eventually went down on a scoreline of 3-14 to 0-11 to Carrigtwohill when round 5 of the Junior Hurling league div 2 was played in Ballynoe on Wednesday evening July 22ndlast.
Twenty four hours later Courcey Rovers were visitors in the latest fixture in the Minor Premier grade 2 hurling league. This game was originally set for Ballinspittle on the Saturday but with no suitable venue available was relocated to Ballynoe on the Thursday. After the original free fell kindly Darragh Lordan was ideally placed to goal the rebound and set up a 1-07 to 1-06 half time lead for the visitors. In a competitive second half the Saints remained upsides their opponents. Substitute John Hurley set up Brian Mulcahy for his and the home teams second goal. Denis Lane tallied a point adding to one already registered in the opening half an hour. Stephen O’Brien was accurate with the frees. Both goalkeepers made telling saves and their handling was assured, Edmond Aherne for the Saints and Stephen Nyahan impressive between the posts for Courceys who eventually claimed a narrow 2-14 to 2-12 success with a late goal from second half substitute Sean O’Brien. Possibly one more challenge match will be arranged before St. Catherines play Mayfield in the third round of the championship, fixed for Lisgoold for Tuesday night August 18th, time to be confirmed.
Its likely that dates will be put on both the U21 Hurling and the Junior B football championship at the next divisional board meeting . Remember there is also provision for a Minor football championship with 3 league games also outstanding.
At juvenile level St Catherines went down to a narrow defeat to Cloyne in the semi final of the thirteen aside U14 C football championship. Final score 4-07 to 4-04. Special mention of team captain Eoin Condon who registered the Saints entire tally all from play.
Fast approaching are the U16 B hurling championship quarter final against Aghada. Fixed for Ballynoe on Saturday evening August 15th. This squad of young players also have a league final to play against Kiltha Og, as have the U14 hurlers against Cobh. While the semi final of the U12 hurling championship with Bride Rovers is also coming up. The U10 hurlers remain unbeaten in their section of a league organised by the Aghada club. While the draws for both the U11 hurling and football leagues will be made at the next meeting of the divisional juvenile board, fixed for Middleton on Tuesday night August 11th.
Being a bank holiday this weeks Lotto draw now for an accumulated €1800 is on in the Big Tree bar Aghern on Tuesday night August 4th.
