Lisgoold News

10 February, 2009

Alas, the 2009 Season has well and truly started, we still have one accolade to mention from the previous year. On December last, C103 launched their annual competition Sports website of the year. To the delight, of the IT section of our GAA Club, last Sunday it was announced that we came in first place, which we feel is a huge achievement for this GAA club, considering the site was only launched January 2008. So we would like to congratulate Paul Stack on his superb work, on now (as proven last Sunday) one of the best sports websites in Cork County. Keep it up Paul.

The winter cold has played foul to most games lately, and last weekend was no exception. Our Division 2 game against St.Catherines was called off, but luckily a challenge match was organised in place of this fixture and the weekend wasn't wasted. As the First Team set-off on their path for 2009 so did the 2ndTeam. Unfortunately, both ended in defeat, but at least their matches were played and the countdown has begun for the championship match against Cobh in 5 Weeks time.

Football Challenge, Feb 8th2009 Lios gCúl 1-10 Youghall 3-8
The first football game of the season was held last Sunday morning as our lads took on Youghal's first team in a challenge game. This was a well-worth exercise in which, was a good blow-out for the team. Captain for the year Wayne Kingston, led the way for Lisgoold and was ably assisted by John Cronin and Charlie McCarthy. Also last Sunday saw the debut of Alan Conroy, who gave quite a good display at midfield.

Lisgoold had a bad start, as Youghal scored an early goal, but this was cancelled out by a lovely goal by Charles Smart who came on for Paul Stack (who we wish a speedy recovery to his hand injury). Some lovely points were scored by both sides as Youghal went in 1-6 to 1-4 in front. As the second half progressed, Lisgoold up the tempo a bit and played some nice passages, but clearly rustiness was beginning to show. A great chance to win the game came, with about 2 minutes to go. This came to Charles Smart who had got through, but he failed to convert, and from the resulting kick out, Youghal went up and scored a sucker punch goal.

It was a good game and Lisgoold have something to build on however, lack of football practice and game time was clearly evident, but this will come (hopefully) before the Cobh match.

Football Division 3, Feb 8th2009 Lios gCúl 1-5 Carrigtwohill 1-7
Our Second String had their first outing of 2009. The game can only be described as a game of two halves, as a howling breeze really did dominate the game and was a factor in the whole match. Lisgoold won the toss and elected to play against the wind. It seemed to be going fine, as the defence of Noel Riordan and Kevin Loughlin was holding firm. A needless goal was conceded, but still they went in at half time 1-6 to 0-3 down but with a wind advantage, and most felt that it was a game that could be won.

A goal by Killian Kingston (who made is Debut at Junior Level as well as Jamie Woods) got Lisgoold going, as the score was brought to the bare minimum at 1-6 to 1-5 soon after the start of the first half but frustratingly, that was as close as they came. Some missed frees and missed goal-scoring opportunities cost Lisgoold dearly, and It was stout defending from Carrig that helped them over the line. This will be seen as two points dropped, considering the advantage Lisgoold had in the second half however, they will (hopefully) pick themselves up for next Tuesday’s clash with Dungourney.

Scorers:Killian Kingston 1-0, Dave O'Sullivan 0-3, Jamie Woods 0-1, Charles Smart 0-3

Team:Donal O'Leary, Moss Mulcahy, Noel O'Riordan, Paul O'Brien, Kieran O'Shea, Micháel O'Sé, Kevin Loughlin, Patrick Connery, Finbarr Brosnan, Charles Smart, Killian Kingston, Mike Riordan, Robert Smart, Dave Sullivan, Jamie Woods.

Subs:Mick Beirne for Paul O'Brien, Paudie Ryan for Moss Mulcahy, Tim O'Calllaghan for Rob Smart.
