Intermediate Hurling Championship

Castlemartyr 2-13 Kildorrery 2-16

Castlemartyr entered the intermediate ranks with a championship opener against Kildorrery in Rathcormack on Sunday. Unfortunately we didn’t get the result we were looking for and move to the back door of round 2 to try and progress. Untimely we left ourselves with too much to do in the second half having trailed by 10 points with 20 minutes remaining. Although we got back to within 2 points with 5 minutes remaining, Kildorrery managed to hold on for the win.

Kildorrery enjoyed the better of the first half exchanges, opening up a 9 points to 4 lead after 25 minutes. However, a brace of Barry Lawton points before half time meant we only trailed by three points going in at half time.

Kildorrery dominated the first 10 minutes of the second half which laid the foundation for their victory. The raised two green flags within a couple of minutes which left Castlemartyr with a mountain to climb. However, a number of tactical switches and substitutions turned the game in our favor and we began to dominate the game and claw our way back into it.

Brian Lawton moved to midfield and powered into the game. Substitute Cian Haines bundled the ball over the line to give us a life line and four minutes Barry Lawton finished to the net after a great run by Brian Lawton.

Eddie Clifford began to grow into the game with three second half points, two of which were set up by substitute Jimmy Smiddy.

However, we couldn’t find the scores in the last few minutes to close the gap so it’s now on to round 2 to meet the losers of Grenagh/Aghabullogue on Sunday 14th June.
