Premier Intermediate Championship;

The eagerly awaiting round 1 of this year’s Intermediate hurling championship took place on Saturday evening last against Watergrasshill in Caherlag.Playing with whatever wind advantage was going we got a dream start with Chris Smith gaoling after 3 minutes following a goalmouth scramble. Colm O’Sullivan pointed from play soon after and when a long Briain Minihane delivery found its way to the net we were 7 points to the good after 10 minutes.

The ‘hill opened their account with a point from a free and their accurate free taker would go on to add 4 more to his tally along with one from play to keep them in touch at half time 2.06 to 6 points.

Points from Chris and Ciaran Mullins from play added to 3 pointed Paudie frees made up the rest of our first half tally.

Paudie opened our account in the second half with an excellent point from the left touchline but it was evident that we were finding scores harder to come by and our opponents were beginning to increase their share of possession. They eventually began to make this possession tell on the scoreboard and would add 1.02 without reply over the next 5 minutes. The goal coming despite 2 excellent Donal Og saves which was eventually finished to the net.

A lengthy Diarmuid free stopped the rot but as the game loosened up the younger Watergrasshill legs began to find extra space and began chipping away at the lead with some excellent points from play.Paudie responded with 2 pointed frees and probably the score of the game a point scored without putting the ball into his hand to keep us 2 ahead.

The momentum however was with the ‘hill and 2 points one from play and a free had them level with 5 minutes to go. The next score was going to be crucial and it went the way of the ‘hill and try as we might we couldn’t get an equalising point to bring the game into extra time, the scoring was completed when Watergrasshill added a point deep into injury time.

Overall a disappointing result after a very bright opening quarter with the missing of frees at vital stages in the second half proving very costly. We do however have another chance when we take on Inniscarra in round 2 on June 20th.
