Cork SHC 1st Round: Killeagh 2-08 Midleton 0-20

The Cork SHC first round meeting against Midleton took place in Castlemartyr on Sunday last. The game started under dry but windy conditions and it finished as the rain started to come down after a fine performance by our seniors against one of this years favourites for the competition. Killeagh got off to the ideal start against the strong wind with a nice opening point from play by Dinny Walsh wearing the number 10 shirt after only 20 seconds on the clock. Midleton scored their first and equalising point from play after two minutes. Midleton went ahead on five minutes with a pointed free but Killeagh free taker Dan Landers quickly brought the scores back level with his point from a free. Over the next five minutes Midleton scored four points without reply to lead the game on a score of six points to two after ten minutes of play. However a minute later Andy Walsh collected the ball from a great Killeagh puckout and sauntered forward on a solo run to score a great goal to bring Killeagh right back into the game. Eoin Keniry got on the scoreboard when he added to the Killeagh score after thirteen minutes with a good point from play out on the wing to bring the sides level on a score of 1-03 to 0-06. Both teams exchanged a couple of wides and over the next sixteen minutes Midleton dominated the scoring by adding six points to their tally to lead on a score of 0-12 to 1-3. Shane Smiddy scored the final point of the half with a well taken point from play to leave Killeagh trailing by five points going in at half-time. The second half got underway with Killeagh playing with the wind behind them but, as in the first half, it was the team playing against the wind who scored first with a point from the Midleton midfielder. Midleton then scored two more points to stay well ahead by eight points and it was not until the fifteenth minute of the second

half when Killeagh got their first score. It was a well taken point from full forward David Cahill from out on the wing. Midleton replied immediately to maintain an eight point difference. After seventeen minutes Killeagh goalkeeper Bernard Rochford struck a sweet free in his own half to add a point to the Killeagh scoreline. He stepped forward again five minutes later to land another point from inside his own half for Killeagh after Midleton had pointed from play. With eight minutes remaining the score was 0-17 to 1-07 in favour of Midleton. Midleton scored another point from play after the puckout to go ahead by eight points but from the resulting restart Killeagh won a free in a dangerous position in front of the Midleton goal. Up stepped Dan Landers and he drove the ball low and to the net to leave the scoreboard reading 0-18 to 2-07 with just over six minutes remaining. However Midleton had the better of the final exchanges and scored two points to Killeagh's one point. The final point of the game came from full forward David Cahill to leave the final score reading Killeagh 2-08 to Midletons 0-20. Next up for Killeagh in the Cork SHC is the second round tie against Youghal.

Cork Panels for Summer Programme:

Well done to the following players who have been selected for the Cork U14, U15, U16 & U17 Summer Programme: U14 hurling is Ryan McCarthy, U15 hurling is Padraig Leahy, U16 hurling is Keane Kelly Budds and at U17 hurling are Kevin Murphy, Jack O'Rourke, Andrew Leahy and Christy Coughlan. Under 11s have mixed fortunes

Our Under 11 squad had a busy week with a hurling game away to St. Colman’s on Tuesday evening in Shanagarry and a football game against neighbours Kiltha Óg on Saturday afternoon in Killeagh. The hurling game was a close affair where our boys were two goals behind after six minutes, but once they began playing they dominated the rest of the game, and with Daniel Walsh banging in the goals, we prevailed by 6-1 to 3-1. Ben Budds and Rory Motherway were very busy in midfield while David Buckley had a terrific second half. Unfortunately for the squad Daniel, David and Ben Fogarty were unavailable for the football game on Saturday, along with some of the Under 10s who normally step up. This meant that we played our 11-a-side game with two Under 9 players, Sean Meade and Fionn Murphy, both of whom were excellent. However, this is a fine Kiltha team and even with our three additional players it’s arguable whether or not we would have won the game. Kiltha kicked some fine points on their way to a 3-10 to 3-1 win, but full credit to our team who battled away until the end, with Conor Meade, Evan Daly and Darragh O’Leary shining, and Danny Fitzgerald scoring a nice goal.

Hurling Team: Dylan McCarthy, Ciaran Brennan, Darragh O’Leary, Diarmuid Buckley, Conor Meade, Evan Daly, Rory Motherway, Ben Budds, Ben Fogarty, Danny Fitzgerald, Daniel Walsh, David Buckley, Jack O’Connor. Kieran O’Brien, Fionn Murphy and Sean Meade played in the football game.
