News (Week 23/2/2009

A hectic weekend for the GAA as every grade is now in full swing, a glimmer of hope was given to the rest of the country with Kilkenny’s four point defeat to the men from Waterford. This showing that they are not as invincible as it seems. A sliver lining came through the dark clouds that overcast Cork GAA and more specifically for Cork football, as CIT captured the Sigerson Cup. This was a magnificent win for the rebel College and no doubt the performances of Colm O’Neill and Daniel Goulding will delight the supporters of Cork football for the year coming.

While in Lisgoold, another County title was added to the club, and it came in regards with Scór Sinsear as A trio of Sisters captured county glory in Ovens. Our U15 Footballers marched into a final which is to be played this weekend. It was also a week of firsts for Lisgoold. Brian O’Leary (who we welcome to the club) made his debut for Lisgoold against Belgooly, the Lisgoold/Leamlara ladies fielded a junior football team for the first time in 12 years, but something more extraordinary was the second team game against Cloyne, in which a rare, but nicely taken headed goal (by an Australian!!!!) came to surface. More about that later.

Challenge Match Feb 25th2009

Lisgoold 4-11 (23)

Belgooly 1-8 (11)

At Riverstick

LAST Wednesday, Lisgoold headed down to Riverstick, as they took on the challenge of Belgooly. A well worthy match exercise as the Junior A Team got some vital game time. However, they can be very disappointed with this performance as there was very sloppy passing and kicking developed and also played (the majority of the time) some poor football. A much disciplined Belgooly defence shut out most attacks from the boys in blue and they opened the scoring with a cracker of a goal in the early few minutes of the first half, in which our stand-in keeper Jerry (who played quite well – again!) had little hope of stopping. The defending of Mike O’Shea and new recruit Brian O’Leary were helping Lisgoold, but they still struggled. Also the loss of Ciarán Cronin, who suffered a broken nose, was a blow for the forwards as he had set up a good few scores (and we wish him a very speedy recovery). It was tit for tat at that stage, as Belgooly led at half-time.

The second half improved only slightly as the men from the Owennacurra Valley got a few scores but they still trailed. Eoin Riordan and Alan Conroy were industrious at midfield and did try to get the team going. However the scores did come, and as Belgooly sent on a huge amount of subs, Lisgoold snuck in with goals from Kevin and John and two from Paul Stack and won the game. This however was a very poor performance, considering it took Belgooly to make a number of substitutions before Lisgoold got going. So, a lot done, but a lot more to do as Lisgoold need to sharpen up their football, and their speed especially for Junior A level as the Championship clash is only two weeks away.
