U 21 Footballers Exit Championship.

U21 Football

Castlelyons 1-08  Kilmeen  5-10

We played the 1st round of the County U 21 football on Sundy night in Ballygarvan. Having won the East Cork Championship a month ago we looked forward to the county championship but we knew that Kilmeen would be a very good football team and with them having the added incentive of revenge for their County Final defeat last year we faced a very difficult match. Playing against the strong wind in the first half we missed some easy point chances as our shooting was off target but at the other end S Hickey made 3 great saves to deny Kilmeen and keep us in the match. Our only score of the half was a good move that started from D Varner and moved through several players for R O Regan to score a great goal and give us a 2 point lead after 15 mins. Kilmeen replied shortly after with a goal and they went in at half time leading by 1-03 to 1-00.
We started the second half very well and with points from A Fenton ,J O Leary and S Hickey we reduced their lead to 1 point. Kilmeen got in for a goal against the run of play but with points from A Spillane and N O Leary we again reduced their lead to 1 point. Kilmeen dominated the last quarter and scored 3 goals to put the match beyond our reach with our last score being a point from R Bransfield. Well done to this panel of players who with very small numbers won the East Cork title and gave a very good account of themselves against a strong Kilmeen team. Thanks also to manager M Spillane and selectors A O Regan, M Carroll and D Cremin for their work and we look forward to the U21 hurling championship later in the summer.

Castlelyons 0-13  Meelin 0-19

We took on Meelin in a challenge match at home  last Thursday night. On what was a fine night this was a fine game with some good passages of play from both sides. Work ,college and injuries prevented some players from playing but this in turn gave others the chance to show management what they could do.Castlelyons started well and the teams were level after 15 min at 4 pts each. Meelin dominated the rest of the half and led at halftime by 11 pts to 5pts. Management made positional and personnel changes for the second half and with both sides scoring good points Meelin ran out winners on a score of 0-19 to 0-13. This was a good run out for the team as it gave match time to players coming back from injury and with championship now 3 weeks away we need everyone going well. We have 2 league matches left before championship when we play Eire Og this week end and we play Charleville next week end.
