Lisgoold News

03 February, 2009

AS GAA celebrated their 125thyear, in fine style, many people thought of the classic games of the past... In hurling we had Cork v Galway 1990, Galway v Kilkenny 2005... In football we had the Kerry v Dublin saga, Cork v Meath in the late 80’s and early 90’s even Tyrone v Kerry from last year, all these games a great example of what the GAA can produce... With January coming to a close, most people look forward to February with great enthusiasm. The cold winter months have now gone away and people will leave everything of the past behind and move on and look forward to the year ahead. Unfortunately our Junior Hurlers, left a Munster Final place behind them as they took on the men of Bruree, last Sunday in the Munster JBHC Semi-Final. In what can only be described as a poor, dour contest, and would never be considered a classic, lisgoold limped out of the Munster campaign by a single point.

Munster JBHC Semi-Final, Feb 2nd2008

Bruree (Luimneach) 1-5 (8)

Lisgoold (Corcaigh) 0-7 (7)

Knocklong, Co. Limerick

With the majority of events called-off last weekend, a huge following was had from the parish of lisgoold as they set on a mission to qualify for a Munster final. A Great buzz was going through the crowd as the anticipated a great match. This unfortunately, for the supporters who brave the hard, cold conditions, did not materialize as the crowd were treated to a game, well below the standard that most people would have expected.

In very cold, brisk conditions, in what had to be said an excellent pitch in knocklong skipper Maurice O’Connell, won the toss and elected to play against the wind. Unlike the events in Croker the night before, very few fireworks were lit up as the first-half, was riddled with frees, and very little play developed. Bruree opened the scoring with a free in the 4thminute, quickly cancelled by moss 2 minutes later. We had to wait until the 19thminute for the next one, as a few little niggling encounters had developed. Lisgoold seem to have got a major break through in the 24thminute as Moss Connell was in for goal. This effort though, was superbly stopped by the corner back, and it resulted in a 65’; this was the only highlight in a forgettable first-half. Both sides marched off from the odd Jaffa cake and tea as the two sides were deadlocked at 0-4 each.

With the wind in the second half, you have to say it was advantage to Lisgoold, but we were foolish to take this match for granted, as the battle-hardened limerick dug deep as fought for every ball in the second half. The boys from Imokilly quickly tapped over a few points as John Cronin and Jonathan finally got going as the score now read 0-6 to 0-5 for lisgoold. In a game as tightly contested as this, it only takes one piece of magic or one error to effectively decide a contest, unfortunately it was the latter. In the 39thminute the bruree hit a mis-shot into the lisgoold goal, and some managed to drop its way into the net. It was a freak goal, but these things happen, but amazingly it was bruree’s first score and only score from play and their last of the game.

Lisgoold tried as hard they could, but could not click into gear. Moss Connell did close the gap, with a free and a 65’but, frustratingly that was as close as they came. A mixture of bad shooting, missed frees and even poor positional switches, cost lisgoold this game as the tamely bowed out of the Munster championship. The stat of 14 wides to 6 says it all, as they just didn’t perform. However, they can hold their heads high as they have captured an east cork and county double and had the experience of playing at Munster level. It was a great adventure, but such a pity they couldn’t go any further.

As for now, we have 6 weeks to get ready for a battle against Cobh in the JAFC so no doubt, Aidan won’t find it too hard, to lift the troops for this encounter. It’s full-steam ahead for the season 2009 and we will start with the football League on Saturday night. Our thanks to Gerry Ryan and his Backroom team of Ned, Jim and Pete for what was a successful year, and hopefully not the last one to have.
