Junior A Hurling League Friday 17th April

Dungourney 0-9 Midleton 1-16

A disappointing result in the latest round of the hurling league for us coming up short against a much sharper Midleton team. Played in perfect conditions on Friday evening Midleton came out all guns blazing early on and we had no answer 1-6 to no score after 15 minutes. The loss of captain Kevin Rohan early on didn’t help our cause. John Ronayne got our first score of the game with a good long range point. Shane Casey had a goal disallowed for square ball which looked very harsh. Midleton added another point with James Leahy replying straight back. Ryan Denny got his first from a free with Midleton adding three more before Ryan got his second point from another free. Niall Motherway got a point from play just before half time with the score Midleton 1-10 Dungourney 0-5.

The second half was a much better showing from our lads as they upped the workrate and but for some errant shooting the final score could have been closer. Midleton got the first point of the second half with Ryan replying from play. Ryan scored another free and Shane Casey got a point from play with Midleton getting two of their own. Shay O’Gorman got a point from play and Midleton scored three more before the final whistle. A poor performance from the lads but its early in the year and with very little hurling done the players and management know they have plenty time to get things right. Team Brian Ahearne, Eoin Ahern, Mark Hegarty, Kieran Ahearne, John Ronayne(0-1), Martin Hennessy, Kevin Rohan, Ryan Denny(0-4 3f), Bill Ahern, Richie O’Neill, Niall Motherway(0-1), Kenneth Kelleher, Shane Casey(0-1), James Leahy(0-1), Colm Griffin, Subs Paudie Harney, Dave Hennessy, Martin Wall, Sean Hegarty, Shay O’ Gorman(0-1)

Junior Hurling League Division 3 Sunday 19th April

Dungourney 3-9 Ballinacurra 2-12

A draw was a fair result for two teams who played out an entertaining 60 minutes of hurling. We were quick out of the traps with Sean Hegartys shot from distance finding the back of the net. Richie O’Neill got a point from play with Ballinacurra getting the next four points levelling the game. Shay O’Gorman added a point from a free before a vintage Kevin Kelleher point from play. Shay got his first point from play, his midfield partner Brian Ahearne then set up Kevin for our second goal of the game. Ballinacurra got 1-2 without reply, Shay then got our third goal of the game bursting through the centre of the defence and rifling to the top corner of the net. Ballinacurra added a further point to their total just before the short whistle leaving the score Dungourney 3-4 Ballinacurra 1-7.

Ballinacurra were quick out of the blocks in the second half and turned a three point deficit into one point lead after four unanswered points. Sean got our first point of the second half after ten minutes with Richie adding one from a free as well. Ballinacurra levelled once again, Colm Griffin put us back in front by the minimum. An absolute monster of a free from Richie from his own 45 sailed over the bar and nearly the net putting us two up. Ballinacurra struck a goal from a free but Richie equalized with another pointed free and that was the final score of the game. A good performance considering the lads haven’t much hurling done and if they cut out some of the fouls will be looking to win promotion in the league. Team Eddie Smiddy, Brendan Rohan, Mark Hegarty, Karl Kiely, Michael Rigney, Will Daly, Sean Broderick, Brian Ahearne, Shay O’Gorman(1-2 1f), Aidan Rigney, Sean Hegarty(1-1), Colm Griffin(0-1), Martin Wall, Kevin Kelleher(1-1), Richie O’Neill(0-4 3f) Subs Andy Cronin, Seamus Ahern, Colin Fitzpatrick, Aidan Davidson.
