Castlelyons GAA Notes

PI Hurling

Watergrasshill  0-18    Castlelyons  2-18

We were back in league action on Saturday evening when we played away to Watergrasshill. This turned out to be a fine open game with good scores on both sides with Castlelyons holding on to their half time lead to win by 2 goals which was the same winning margin when we played them in the PIH championship last June. M Spillane and R Bransfield had our first scores  to take a lead that we held until the end of the match. 2 long range frees from A O Sullivan left the scores 0-04 to 0-03 after 10 mins and 1 point from J O Leary and 2 in a row from D Lawlor left us 4 points up after 15 mins. A Fenton with the next 3 points extended out our lead as we played some great hurling with good ball coming out of defence and great interplay between midfield and forwards. A O Sullivan with another long range free and R Bransfield both scored points but in the last 10 mins we got sloppy and conceded 5 scoreable frees to Watergrasshill. We got the last score of the half when a good ball out of defence from T Carroll was won in the air by S Moroney who beat his man and scored a fine goal to leave us winning at half time by 1-12 to 0-09.

We started the second half brightly with S Moroney getting the first point of the half and when R Feeney sent A O Sullivan through for a great goal we were well ahead and playing well. We again conceded a lot of frees in this half which kept Watergrasshill in the match and we had points from A O Sullivan , R Bransfield and A Fenton to close out the match and win on a score of 2-18 to 0-18. A very good performance by all that played and now lets keep this run going and build up the confidence.  Also it was great to see some of our long term injured making a return in this match and with championship just 6 weeks away confidence is building and a good team is taking shape. We are back in football championship next weekend when we play Carraig na bhFear in Round 2 of the East Cork Championship on Saturday @ 7.00 pm.

JB Hurling

We played St Itas in a Junior B challenge match in Castlelyons on Bank Holiday Monday. This was their first match of the season as a team and for some players their first game of the year but the training that they are doing showed as we were too strong for St Itas and ran out convincing winners. The East Cork Junior B league programme will be starting in the next few weeks so keep up the training as this team has great potential.
