Minors shine with an impressive win

Pairc Ui Chinneide was the venue for the Minor league clash between Douglas and Killeagh/Ita's on Thursday 2nd April. Killeagh/Ita's had registered 1-4 on the scoreboard before Douglas replied with a point from a free. Shane was first on the score sheet, with Aaron splitting the posts next. Jack Mercuchev completely fooled the Douglas goalie with his shot on goal and the ball ended up in the top corner of the net. Killian scored his first point of an impressive 1-9 personal tally, with Shane putting another over the bar. It was the 12 minute of the game before Douglas registered a score with a point from a free. Killian

replied by scoring from a free, while on the other end of the pitch Douglas scored a point from a 65. Our back line were very impressive on the day and the game was into its 23rd minute when Douglas scored their first point from play. At half time Killeagh/Ita's were leading on a score of 1-9 to 4 pts with Killian, Jack, Aaron and Dave each scoring points before the whistle blew. Play resumed and Killeagh/Ita's showed no sign of taking their foot off the pedal and had tacked on another five points to their score when in the eighth minute Douglas scored their first point of the second half. Referee Jim Daly awarded Killeagh/Ita's a penalty in the 13th minute of the game and it was superbly converted to a goal by Killian who also went on to score the next two points for Killeagh/Ita's. Douglas went on to score a point and a goal which gave them their final score of 1-6, however Killeagh/Ita's weren't finished yet with Killian and Shane each scoring a point to give Killeagh/Ita's a full-time score of 2-18.[OS]

Under 16s begin with impressive win

Our Under 16 hurlers began their league campaign in impressive style with a comprehensive victory over Erins Own in Caherlag on Monday last. Goals from Keane Budds (from a ’65) and Jamie Clifford in the first seven minutes gave our lads a head start, and with the strong wind at our backs, we kicked on and scored 2-9 to just a point in reply by half time. The second half saw Erins Own mount a fight back with the wind but our forwards were clinical every time the ball came up to their end, with Richie Long, Jamie Clifford, Shane Kearney and Olin Hennessy getting further goals to give us a well-earned first two points of the campaign. Next up is a local derby game against Youghal.[CM]

Panel: Fionn McDonnell (C), Darragh Geary, Dylan Hogan, Kieran Daly, Barry Motherway, Jamie Landers, Daniel Hickey, Keane Budds, Padraig Leahy, Richie Long, Sean Walsh, Shane Kearney, Sean Broderick, Jamie Clifford, Adrian Galvin, Olin Hennessy, James Kent, Liam McCarthy, Andrew Foley, Jack Wyse.

Under 14s also open impressively

Following on the footsteps of the Under 16s, our Under 14s gave a fine display of point scoring to defeat Mallow by 1-18 to 0-2 on Easter Saturday at sunlit Páirc Uí Chinnéide. Daniel Lucey was the scoring star of a keenly contested first half, bagging 1-3 and causing headaches for the Mallow defence. At the other end Cian McDonald had to marshal his defence on a number of occasions, while Oisin McCarthy worked hard in midfield. Olan Broderick finished with six points in total, while sub Ben O’Connor added three of his own in the second half. Next up is Féile in Cobh next Saturday where we play Cobh, Na Piarsaigh, Bandon and St. Colman’s.[CM]

Panel: Dara Motherway, Aaron O’Connell, Cian McDonald, Danny Cunningham, Robert Sinclair, Ryan McCarthy (C), Richie Landers, Karl O’Toole, Oisin McCarthy, Cathal Fitzgibbon, David Kelly, Owen Cosgrove, Olan Broderick, Daniel Lucey, Darragh O’Connor, Paul Delaney, George Sinclair, Ben O’Connor, Christian Coughlan.

Easter Camp gets loads of bunnies hopping!

Boys and girls from 4 to 14 were bunny hopping, running, jumping, wrestling, and doing a little bit of hurling and football too (!) for three days in Páirc Uí Chinnéide last week. Sean Crowley was the brains behind this highly successful Easter Camp which was a hit with the more than 150 participants, their parents and club officers. The Camp also benefitted the many young coaches who were tutored and nurtured by Sean and other coaching experts like Shane Supple, Ger Foley, Philip O’Neill. Some of these teenagers will surely one day be the coaching experts themselves imparting their knowledge to a younger generation. The circle of life!! Well done Sean, Ursula and all who helped to make this such a success.[CM]
