Premier 2 Minor Football Championship

Venue Delany’s

Glenville 1-5

Bishopstown 2-10

On Saturday March 28th last our minor footballer’s travelled to Delany’s to compete in the first round of the premier 2 football championship game v Bishopstown. Our lads came into this game with an unbeaten run winning their opening four league matches. Glenville decided to play against the strong breeze in the first half but it was Bishopstown who would register the opening score after five minutes. Our lads responded with a Dilan O’Donovan free but that would be our only score for fifteen minutes as it all Bishopstown as they drove forward and hit 1-2 without reply. Our lads responded in great style with some brilliant hand passing from Aaron Collins who put Josh Cooke through on goal and buried the ball in the back of the Bishopstown net. Kyle Cronin was causing havoc for the Bishopstown backs and was soon rewarded with a lovely point to reduce the deficit to just one. Minutes later Dilan O’Donovan put over his second free of the match to bring the teams level at the interval 1-3 to 1-3. Our lads turned up the tempo in the second half and a Kyle Cronin point straight from the throw in had us one in front. Bishopstown who were always dangerous

going forward hit the next four points without reply. The game was still nip and tuck going into the final few minutes and Dilan O’Donovan put over his third point in the 58 minute to reduce the margin down to two points. Bishopstown went on to hit 1-3 in the space of five minutes and ran out winners in the end. Our lads will now have to take the back door if they want to stay in the championship. But for now the minor’s will take a break until the end of the Leaving Cert in June. Junior A Football Championship

Venue Rathcormac

Glenville 1-5

St Catherine’s 0-7

On Sunday March 29th last our junior A football team made the short journey down to Rathcormac to compete in the first round of the championship v St Catherine’s. We often talk about a game of two half’s and indeed this was one on a very windy afternoon. Glenville decided to play against the strong Gale force wind in the first half and a William Connolly point in the second minute had us up and running. For the next 28th minutes it was all St Catherine’s with a string of unanswered points and led at the interval 0-5 to 0-1. Whatever was said in the Glenville dressing room at half time

had an immediate effect in the opening minute and William Connolly added his second point from a free to reduce the margin to just three points. There was a new look within this Glenville team as they surged forward looking for another scoring opportunity and the gap was down to just two points after Niall Griffin put over a brilliant point and within second’s Noel Cahill chipped in from an impossible angle to reduce the margin down to one. From the kick out saw David Quirk win the breaking ball and set Glenville on the move again and set up William Connolly who broke past four st Catherine’s players and buried the ball in the back off the net to put us two in front. St Catherine’s ended the scoring spree in the 54th minute as they broke up the field on the counter attack and hit over a well taken point and two minutes later the sides were level. The final few minutes were very nip and tuck as both teams went in search for the winning score and it looked like it was going to be extra time but come at the day come at the hour William Connolly stepped up and hit over the winning score. Well done on a great game of Gaelic football a brilliant team performance.
