Senior Hurling

Our senior hurling continued playing challenge games with a good work out against a Cork under 21 selection in CIT on Friday night. It was a very worthwhile game with everyone putting in great effort and despite losing by six points on a score of 0-19 to 0-13 the players and management learned a lot. We play Douglas in the Red FM Cork SHL on Sat next April 4th at 5pm in Killeagh. Please support [RR]

Junior Football

Our junior 'A' footballers had a league game against Ballinacurra last Saturday evening in Killeagh. While clearly outclassed for most of the game they gave a good account of themselves and were unlucky not to notch up a few more scores. [AP]

Minors

A very wild and windy Pairc Ui Chinneide played host to Midleton minor hurlers on Sunday 29th March. A very strong wind across the pitch was a hugely influential factor in this challenge game. Many a sliotar sailed left and right of the posts as players tried unsuccessfully to guage the wind. Midleton were the first to register a score as a white flag was raised for them, however Killeagh/Ita's soon found their scoring range. Killeagh/Ita's were leading by a point at half time on a score line of 1-6 to 1-5. However when the full time whistle blew it was Midleton who were ahead by the narrowest of margins. The full time score was 2-11 to 2-12.

Team: A Walsh, F Smiddy, E Barron, L Fogarty, J Landers, C Deane, C Coughlan, P Delaney, K Treacy 1-1, K Budds 0-4, A Leahy 1-3, E Fitzgibbon 0-1, S Kearney 0-1, J Mercuchev, C Broderick 0-1. Subs D Landers, P Leahy [OS]

Paddy Whelan Memorial U-14 Tournament Lismore

Killeagh-Ita’s 1-2, Mount Sion 1-1.

Killeagh-Ita’s 2-1, Cois Brid 1-1.

Killeagh-Ita’s 1-11, Naomh Carthaigh 3-6

Our Under 14 hurlers travelled to Lismore to play in the Paddy Whelan tournament on Saturday and had an eventful morning. Four teams participated – the hosts Naomh Carthaigh, their neighbours Cois Bríd, and the city slickers Mount Sion. We played Mount Sion in our first game and secured a narrow 1-2 to 1-1 victory, with Ben O’Connor raising the green flag following a great pass from Darragh O’Connor. Next up was Cois Bríd, and this time we won by 2-1 to 1-1, with Daniel Lucey and Robbie Treacy getting the goals and David Kelly scoring a point. So this set us up for a final against our hosts, and this was a real thriller. We played with the wind in the first half and got off to a great start with a 1-8 to 1-1 lead. Daniel Lucey, Ryan McCarthy, Ciaran Leahy, Cathal Fitzgibbon and Ben O’Connor were the scorers but the team played well all through. It was backs to the wall for the second half and despite adding two points from frees, Naomh Carthaigh replied with 2-3 to leave the scores level 1-10 to 3-4. On to extra time, where we held a slender one point lead (Cathal again) after the initial five minutes, but Naomh Carthaigh got two points with the wind in the final five to edge it by the minimum. So great credit to our team, who put up a terrific performance from start to finish and were unlucky to be pipped at the post. Many thanks to the Lismore club for inviting us to this prestigious tournament and for their fine spread of food provided to all on the day.

Team: Dara Motherway, Danny Cunningham, Cian McDonald, Aaron O’Connell, Robert Sinclair, Ryan McCarthy, Richie Landers, Oisin McCarthy, Owen Cosgrove, David Kelly, Ben O’Connor, Cathal Fitzgibbon, George Sinclair, Daniel Lucey, Darragh O’Connor, Christian Coughlan, Ciaran Leahy, Robbie Treacy. U13

With clocks changed the night before there was no chance that any player would be late for their first league match of the year. Killeagh/Ita's U13 where facing Midleton for their first competitive match of the season at a very blustery Pairc Ui Chinneide. Never more was the saying a "game of two halves" appropriate. Midleton had score a very impressive 4 goals and 3 points while we had just registered 1 goal and 3 points. Our boys were battling hard but were failing to convert their efforts into scores. A very passionate half-time talk by Donie had our boys buzzing going into the second half and what a second half it proved to be. Our boys played fantastic hurling and held Midleton scoreless in the second half. Killeagh/Ita's completely dominated and scored an impressive 5 goals and 4 points to which Midleton had no reply. Full time score 4-3 to 6-7

Team: A Fitzgibbon, R Farquhar, P Landers, C Desmond, D Collins 0-2, R Treacy 1-2, B Murphy, C Leahy 0-1, P Kent 1-0, R Bernard, C Coughlan, B O Connor 2-2, D Doherty 1-0 C O'Rourke, T McCarthy. Subs P Mackey 1-0, B Jennings [OS]

U12 Hurling League Erins Own 0-5, Killeagh-Ita’s 4-10

An impressive performance gave Killeagh-Ita’s U12 victory in their opening league game on Saturday last in a windy Caherlag. Erins Own played with the wind in the first half and were first to score, and

were putting our backs under pressure. George Walsh, Darragh O’Leary and Colm Treacy led the defence strongly, while Ben Budds was a safe cúl báire. In a clever move, David Buttimer was moved from corner-forward to forage around midfield against the wind, and he did that extremely effectively. Erins Own led by 0-5 to 0-2 before Colm Leahy restored parity with a fine goal. At half-time we led by a point, 1-3 to 0-5. The second half was more one-sided as Erins Own struggled to get the ball up the field against the strong wind. Colm Leahy, Aaron Fitzgibbon and Paudie Mackey added goals, while Evan Lane scored fine points from play and from frees. Well done boys, next up is a football game against Midleton in two weeks time.

Team: Ben Budds, Darragh O’Leary, George Walsh, Jack Flanagan, David Buckley, Colm Treacy, Daniel Walsh, Evan Lane, Eoin Brenner, Aaron Fitzgibbon, Paudie Mackey, Rory Motherway, David Buttimer, Colm Leahy, Ben Fogarty.[CM]

Under 7s and Under 8s have a Monster Morning!Saturday 28th March saw the first blitz of the new season held at Killeagh GAA grounds. The day was cool and damp but parents and kids arrived full of enthusiasm. Killeagh Ita's fielded two teams at Under 7 and two teams at Under 8 and all boys displayed great determination and skill in the games. Well done to everyone. Our next blitz is hurling, to be held in Carrigtwohill on Saturday 18th April. Many thanks to all who participated to make it a very successful day, and to the parents who assisted in providing refreshments after the blitz.
