JAFC Castlemartyr 0-14 Aghada 0-11

Castlemartyr travelled to Shanagarry on Saturday to take on Aghada in the first round proper of the East Cork JAFC. Conditions on the day didn’t make for attractive football with a gale blowing across the field, not helping any team in particular.

Castlemartyr trailed Aghada for the majority of the game and only took the lead for the first time after 53 minutes when Cian Haines pointed to put us 0-08 to 0-07 ahead. However Aghada responded with 2 points and it looked as if we were destined for the back door as we headed into injury time. Colm Beausang then picked up a ball around the middle of the field and ran at the heart of the Aghada defense drawing a free. Up stepped Jaime Stack to slot the free over and we headed for an extra 20 minutes to find a winner.

Castlemartyr started extra time in fantastic fashion, scoring 4 unanswered points in the first 5 minutes through Liam Martin, Brian O’Tuama, Jamie Stack and Eddie Clifford. This proved enough of a cushion and after that we stayed strong in defense and closed out the match.

It was a great team performance. Our half back line of Liam Martin, Barra O’Tuama and Cahal Martin were excellent. At midfield Adrian Bowens gave a man of the match performance, scoring three points from play and continuously running at a packed Aghada defense. Upfront Jamie Stack proved what an excellent free taker he is with 4 pointed frees in such windy conditions as well as chipping in with 3 points from play.

So we now move into round three which where we will face a winner from the back door fixtures.
