Lisgoold GAA Notes

24 March, 2015

All roads lead to Ballynoe this Saturday afternoon as Lisgoold will clash with near neighbours Bride Rovers in the first round of the JAFC. The Bride will be tough opposition and after winning the Junior B Last season, their confidence will be high no doubt.. The following day will see our second team strangely playing their first game of the year in the last week of March which turns out to be Championship! This is against Aghada with Time and Venue TBC. Best of luck to both teams..

Under 21 B Football Final

Castlegoold 1-7 (10)

Castlelyons 2-11 (17)

At Killeagh

27th March 2015

Our under 21s came up short last Friday night in the east cork final. We had a great start as John Cashman raised a white flag after only a few minutes. The game was tit for tat for the first half. Castlelyons were gaining the upper hand but points from John Cashman, Cian Hayes and a lovely 45 from Jamie Stack ensured we weren’t too far behind. The two Martin brothers played fine, as well as Ciaran O’Se. The absence of Cathal Cashman was a factor though as our aerial dominance from the previous games, wasn’t the same. However, we weren’t too far behind at 0-8 to 0-5 come the short whistle.

The second half saw Castlelyons took over, John Cashman again was tacking on points, however this came after Castlelyons bagged a goal through Alan Fenton. Here with the likes of Anthony Spillane, Niall O’Leary & Ronan Bransfield they took over the game. We had a case of a goal mid-way near the end but it was disallowed by the referee Brian Murphy of Carrigtwohill, this may have altered the game a small but in fairness, Castlelyons were the superior squad. Brian Hogan did get a late goal for us but it was too little, too late. Our congratulations to Castlelyons and heads up to our lads they had a great run and the both their clubs very proud.

Castlelyons will now wait till June to play the County Quarter-final, it’s here one would question the board’s decision on playing it so early given the amount of time available to play it. Surely, it would be more beneficial to ensure both teams have full squads available. However, the competition has now passed and this issue is for discussion at the closed season. For our lads, it was a fine run but a slightly disappointing end. However they have done everyone proud.

JFL Division 1

Lisgoold 3-12 (21)

Erins Own 3-6 (15)

At Caherlag

29th March 2014

As the score line suggests a very competitive encounter was experienced last Sunday afternoon as we came away with the two points on offer. Lisgoold made a few changes from the previous day and were in a spot of bother from the word go. Basic errors and poor performances by the full back line led to concession of two quick goals, we recovered with the Johns in midfield playing well and the forward doing well enough to click into gear. The game did have a few scuffles here and there and we were even at half time 3-3 to 2-6. Our strength in depth showed in the second half as the management rang in the changes. With a slight breeze behind our backs we slowly got on top and eventually came through. Our feet are firmly planted on the ground but there were some very poor performances within the team and they will need to sharpen their skills come Saturday. However, it was great to tack on another two points on the league table. We have now football championship coming up so hopefully we will be able to get through to the next round. Best of luck, Lads.
