Under 21 Football Championship Semi-Final

Dungourney 1-7 Castlegoold 1-8

The championship dream is over for our under 21 footballers after a heartbreaking loss to Castlegoold in Youghal on Saturday night. Conditions were poor a strong swirling breeze and rain making it very difficult for either side to try and play football.

Castlegoold were first out of the blocks and had a point on the board after a minute, Bill Ahern levelled things with a point soon after.  Bill put us in front with a pointed free after Niall Motherway was fouled. Castlegoold equalized, Ryan Denny put us back in front with a point from play. The scores were level again on twenty minutes at three points apiece and that was the score at half time. Some errant shooting costing us having dominated possession for long periods.

Castlegoold were first to score in the second half with a point, Shane Hegarty replied with a point from play. Two quick points from Castlegoold left us two points down after ten minutes of the second half. Our next score came from an unlikely source, Kieran Ahearne started the move in the full back line passing it to Niall, Kieran continued his run and was there at the other end to finish to the back of the net putting us back in front by a point. Two pointed frees from Castlegoold put them back in front by the minimum. We pushed on again with the next three scores two points from Shane and one from Steve McCarthy leaving us two points up going into added time. We were to be cruelly denied with Castlegoold getting a goal and from the resulting kick out we got the ball won a free within shooting range and the referee bizarrely blew for full time. A loss by the narrowest of margins for our lads.

Well done to all the players and the management who put in a massive effort all year and can be very proud of their efforts.
