Castlelyons in East Cork U21 B Football Final

U 21 Football

Castlelyons 3-11  Glenbower Rovers 0-07

Castlelyons qualified for the East Cork U21 B football final when we defeated Glenbower Rovers in the semi final on Friday night in Castlelyons. In a match that had everything from super saves , great defending and fantastic scores Castlelyons put on a great show for a young team. R Bransfield had our first score of the match a point after 3 mins and J Barry  added a great goal after 5 mins to extend our lead.N O Leary doubled our lead when he added another goal and we were dominant and leading by 2-01 after 10 mins. A Fenton and R Bransfield added 2 points before Glenbower got their first point of the match and we were leading by 2-03 to 0-01 after 15 mins. Glenbower Rovers came more into the match in the last 10 mins and added 3 points to their tally but we replied with points from A Spillane N O Leary and R Bransfield to lead at half time by 2-06 to 0-04 after a great 30 mins football. The second half was a more even contest but we still picked off some good points from A Spillane , N O Leary , A Fenton, and R Bransfield and when  A Spillane was put through for a very well worked goal this game was over as a contest. Our backs yet again played very well and limited Glenbower Rovers to 3 pts in the second half and we ran out winners on a score of 3-11 to 0-07. We now go on to play Castlegoold ( a combination of Castlemarthyr and Lisgoold) in the final on  the weekend of the 21th March.

PI Hurling

Valley Rovers 2-11  Castlelyons  2-11

Points were shared in this PI Hurling league match which was played in dry bright conditions in Brinny on Sunday morning. M Spillane opened our scoring with a point from a free in the 1st min and D Lawlor added to this with a good point from play before Valley Rovers got their opening point. Shortly after we conceded an easy goal and this gave Valley Rovers a 3 pt lead after 15 mins. We had a very good last quarter when some great play resulted in points for R Feeney , D Lawlor , A Spillane and when R Feeney played a great ball into A Fenton who scored a well taken goal we were 3 pts ahead at half time. The second half started very brightly for us and with some great moves and interplay between backs and forwards we added points from R Bransfield M Spillane and A Fenton. Another great move with the ball starting in the full back line and passing between 6 different players resulted in a great goal scored by A Spillane put us 6 points ahead with 10 mins to go. That we could not hold on to that lead was frustrating and Valley scored 1-04 in the last 10 mins to level the match and share the points. A lot of positives in this match with some great sweeping movements and interplay and as our fitness and hurling improves so also will the results. We don't have any league match next weekend so we have a challenge match against Effin in Castlelyons on Sunday afternoon.

Team : S O Sullivan, D Sexton, C O Leary, T Carroll, A O Sullivan, L Sexton, K O Leary, E Maye R Feeney (0-01), R Bransfield (0-01), S Moroney, D Lawlor (0-03) A Fenton (1-01) A Spillane (1-01) M Spillane  (0-04  3f)

Subs Used  N O Leary, R Fenton.

Jer Barry RIP

It was with great sadness that the Castlelyons community learned of the sudden passing, on Monday evening, of Jer Barry our club president. Jer was a life long member and supporter of Castlelyons GAA club and was involved with the club from the day he first played to the present day when he is our club president. Even though his health deteriorated in the past few years it did not stop him from attending and enjoying every match that took place at home and away from juvenile up to adult. The club extend their sincerest sympathy to his sons ,daughter, grandchildren and his extended family.

Membership for the 2015 season is now open .Fees of  € 50 for Adults and € 20 for Students and OAP can be paid to  Donal O Leary (treasurer) , Denis Fenton (PRO) or any club officer.
