Under 21 Football Championship Quarter Final

Dungourney 3-12 Carrignavar 0-6

A good win for our under 21 football team against Carrignavar in their quarter final. Played in Carrignavar, conditions were poor with feet stuck to the ground and bitterly cold on top of that. Last weeks game made a big difference to the lads as they were a lot quicker out of the traps compared to last week. We were against the breeze in the first half.

A minute was all it took to open the scoring with James McCarthy bursting through from midfield and laying it off to Bill Ahern who finished well from an acute angle. Bill added another from a free after Dan McGrath was fouled. Our next score came after ten minutes and it was a green flag from James after some good build up play from Bill, Shane Hegarty and Ryan Denny with the final pass to James. That opened up a five point lead and then Carrignavar responded with a point from a free. We quickly replied with a point from Ryan from play. Shane won the resulting kick out and a quick exchange of passes with Niall Motherway set James up and he rattled the back of the net. Shane added another point soon after and Carrignavar replied with two points in quick succession. Bill got his third point of the game after a beautiful pass from Steve McCarthy. We added a third goal just before the break - Dan finishing well to the net from a Shane pass. We were reduced to fourteen men just before the break with Pa being sent off for an off the ball incident. At half time we were in the lead on a score line of Dungourney 3-5 Carrignavar 0-3.

Bill dropped to wing back with Steve coming out to wing forward and two now playing in the full forward line. The second half was slow to get going with a lot of frees being conceded around the middle third by both teams. It took six minutes for the scoreboard to change with Shane finishing well from a James layoff. Shane popped over another a minute later after a quick one-two with Ryan. Dan added another point on forty minutes picking the ball up on the right wing from a nice Shane pass in acres of space and he galloped towards goal before slotting over. Dan turned provider soon after supplying the ball in to Steve who was threatening all day and tapped the ball over for his first point. Carrignavar responded with their first point of the second half. We had two quick points one from the hardworking Colm Griffen and the other from Ryan. Two more late points from Carrignavar closed the game before Shane added the final score of the game a point from a free. Final Score Dungourney 3-12 Carrignavar 0-6.

A Great performance from all the lads Brian Ahearne was brilliant in goals pulling off some fantastic saves at crucial times. Defense was rock solid throughout with Kieran Ahearne, Andy Cronin and Niall Motherway impressing. Colin Fitzpatrick and James McCarthy worked hard in midfield with Colin physically dominating and James getting some great scores. Our forwards were very clinical in front of goals in this game with only a handful of wides in the game. Dan McGrath, Shane Hegarty and Ryan Denny the most impressive. The reward for the Lads is a Semi-Final against CastleGoold which is due to be played 7/8 March.
