Killeagh GAA Club Weekly News

23 February, 2015

Our fundraising night in Curraheen Park takes place this Saturday night, February 28th 2015. All proceeds from the race night have been ring-fenced for use in the completion of the road from our entrance gates up to our club premises. Great progress has been made over the years in improving and expanding our club facilities and the construction of the new road will greatly enhance both the appearance and access to our fantastic facilities for all members and all visitors to our club. Tickets for the night are priced at a modest €10 for entry for one adult to a night of fun-filled greyhound racing. A steering committee for this fundraiser chaired by JJ Fennelly are currently working very hard to make this night a huge success and patrons can contact JJ on 0866483738, Kieran Scully on 0858037343, Sean Treacy on 0863923131, or Padraig McGrath on 0878575678 to purchase tickets or for further information about other activities on the night. Incidentally, those purchasing a ticket for the night will be automatically entered into a draw for some really valuable prizes like iPhones and All-Ireland Final Tickets so you can still be a winner if, for any reason, you cannot attend the racing. Our U21 football team made a winning start to the year for our club when they won their 1/4 final match against a very fancied Fr O'Neills outfit on Saturday evening under lights in Youghal. We took this game by the scruff of the neck from the star, with Mathew Murphy knocking over an early free followed with a great score from play. Shane Smiddy showed his natural ability with two more well taken points from play as the Glenbower outfits dominance began to show on the score board. With our backs working tirelessly to keep the opposition forwards under raps, where Darragh Cahill and Ciaran O' Brien showed some great leadership and our midfield and half forwards were full of movement and running and our constant pressure let to two more Shane Smiddy points from frees and we finished the half with a superbly worked point from Jack O'Rourke, leaving the half time score Glenbower rovers 7pts to Fr O' Neills 3. As expected Fr. O' Neills upped their work rate in the second half and we found it difficult to get the ball into the oppositions half of the pitch but when we did we were a threat and managed to add to our tally with a pointed free from Shane Scully and when David Cahill launched a high ball into the square half time substitute Dan Landers rose highest and won the ball and when he was going past his man he was pulled to the ground and Shane was as cool as ice when he converted the resulting penalty. After this Fr. O'Neills began to dominate possession but superb defending help us to finish the game on a winning score of 1-8 to 0-8. This was a great victory made out of great team work and attitude by the team, we now are now back in an east cork semi final where we meet a strong Castlelyons side. Team 1. Colin Walsh 2. U16s Get Stuck In The Mud In Glenville

Glenville 3-6, Killeagh-Ita’s 1-2

Our Under 16 footballers began their league campaign for 2015 in the less than salubrious surroundings of Fouhy Park, Glenville on Saturday last. The pitch was, unfortunately, not conducive to playing any sport with a ball – if the slope had been a bit steeper from the far corner maybe those speed skaters that were in Stormont could have tried their luck! Our young team, with only 5 Under 16s, acquitted themselves very well in the first half, with Keane Budds opening the scoring and our defenders, especially Dylan Hogan at full-back and Shane Kearney and Padraig Leahy in the half-back line, playing excellent football in the testing conditions. Sean Walsh and Sean Broderick worked tirelessly in midfield and we were rewarded when Keane finished to the net on 22 minutes to leave us trailing by 1-2 to 1-1. Glenville added two more points before half-time while we failed to convert our opportunities. Unfortunately we lost our full-back to a ‘cárta dubh’ just before half-time and this upset the balance of our team. Again after half-time we failed to convert further chances and Glenville eventually breached our defence with two goals in the 42nd and 48th minutes. Our defenders continued their stubborn resistance and Olin Hennessy made some excellent saves in goal. Although we could not now win the game our team worked to the end and had a goal by Barry Motherway disallowed as the referee had blown for a penalty. Unfortunately our penalty taker Richie was badly impeded by the underfoot conditions and was unable to place his kick with his usual accuracy and the Glenville keeper made a fine save, and the rebound was kicked wide, which was the final act of an entertaining game. Well done boys on a game performance which pleased our coaches Sean and Brian.

Team: Olin Hennessy, Darragh Geary, Dylan Hogan, James Kent, Barry Motherway, Shane Kearney, Padraig Leahy, Sean Walsh, Sean Broderick, Richie Long, Keane Budds (1-2), Adrian Galvin, Andrew Foley, Jamie Clifford, Jack Wyse, Kieran Daly, Cian McDonald.

U14 Hurling Challenge Bride Rovers 1-8, Killeagh-Ita’s 0-10

Our Under 14 hurlers had their second game of 2015 against a strong Bride Rovers outfit on Sunday morning in Rathcormac. This was a very good game of hurling given the testing ground conditions. Ben O’Connor and Olan Broderick combined well to get some lovely scores from play in the first quarter, but Bride Rovers then scored a lucky goal somewhat against the run of play. We hurled well from the back with Paul Delaney, Danny Cunningham and Richie Landers clearing loads of ball down the wings. Cathal Fitzgibbon and Dara Motherway scored a point each before half-time to give us a 0-6 to 1-2 lead at half time. The second half saw scores harder to come by, although Oisin McCarthy scored a fine point to add to his football scores from last weekend. Bride Rovers hit some fine long-distance points and edged ahead and although Ryan McCarthy scored the final point of the game, we were behind by one at the final whistle. A useful workout on a day not best suited to free-flowing hurling.

Team: Robbie Treacy, Paul Delaney, Cian McDonald, George Sinclair, Danny Cunningham, Ryan McCarthy, Richie Landers, Ben O’Connor, Dara Motherway, Cathal Fitzgibbon, David Kelly, Olan Broderick, Daniel Doherty, Daniel Lucey, Darragh O’Connor, Oisin McCarthy, Owen Cosgrove, Ciaran Leahy, Aaron O’Connell, Tommy Noonan.
