Dungourney GAA Notes

16 February, 2015

mon16th Feb Junior Football League

Dungourney 1-8 Midleton 3-4

First league outing of 2015 began with a loss tonight against Midleton played in artic conditions in Jamesey Kelleher Memorial Park. A disappointing start to the year but plenty of positives to take from the game and build on for the year ahead. We were slow to get going in the first half and trailed on a scoreline of 2-3 to 0-2. We really upped the ante in the second half and reaped the rewards with some intricate passing moves being finished well by the forwards. In the end we just came up short with the goals Midleton got proving crucial. Plenty to look forward to with this group best on the night were Martin Hennessy, Dan McGrath, Brendan Rohan and Brian Ahearne.

Scorers Brian Ahearne 0-4 3f Colm Griffin 1-0 Martin Hennessy 0-2 Dan McGrath 0-1 Sean Hegarty 0-1

Under 21 Football Championship

Dungourney 2-9 Cloyne 2-5

A good start for our Under 21s Championship campaign against Cloyne on Saturday in Shanagarry.  Rovers take a bow pitch was in good condition, a dry day and no breeze great conditions for aspiring footballers.

A slow start for the lads, first game of the year, plenty of cobwebs to be blown away, wayward shooting and errant passes a feature early on. It took almost five minutes for the first score to come, Shane Hegarty splitting the posts with point from play. Cloyne levelled a minute later before we got the first major of the game, a high ball in to the square from Shane broke nicely to Steve McCarthy and he buried the ball to the net. Some great defending from our lads was keeping the Cloyne attack at bay. We just struggled to get scores on the board and it wasn’t till the 20thminute when Bill Ahern got our second point and Ryan Denny added another point soon after. Two quick Cloyne points cut the deficit to only a goal. Two Shane frees extended our advantage again and at the short whistle we lead 1-5 to 0-3.

The second half took time to get going with defences on top for the first ten minutes. A move that began in defence with fluid passing interchanges, great running from Bill Ahern up the field ended with our second goal from Aidan Davidson. A great finish finding the bottom corner from a difficult angle. Shane added another point from a free after Dan McGrath was fouled. Ryan added another point with a nice score from play and Colm Griffin soon after split the posts for another point. A point from play from Cloyne reduced the difference between the teams, that score was quickly replied to with another point from play from Shane. Two late goals from Cloyne and a point closed the gap late on but the lads finished out the game to win by four points.

A good win for the lads as the game developed the passing improved and mistakes which are always there at the start of the year were eliminated.  Some great performances on the day from Paudie Harney and Niall Motherway in defence, Bill Ahern and Colin Fitzpatrick worked tirelessly in the middle of the pitch; Shane Hegarty and Steven McCarthy were impressive upfront. All the lads put in a massive effort and a Quarter final date against Carrignavar is the reward for the lads. That fixture is down to be played next weekend the 21st/22nd of February. Check the Facebook Twitter and Website closer to the date for fixture details.
