Youghal 3-8 Russell Rovers 1-8

Our minor hurlers failed to get over the first hurdle of this round-robin MAHC against a stronger Youghal outfit in Copperalley last Thursday night. Despite getting off to a disappointing start when we conceded a soft goal in the 2ndminute, our lads rallied to lead by a point at the end of the first quarter, courtesy of two converted frees by Brian Hartnett and a dipping shot from the same player which deceived the Youghal keeper and ended up in the back of the net. Indeed, Hartnett was unlucky not to have scored a hat-trick of goals. In the 19thminute his rasping shot was deflected over the bar and five minutes later he had the ball in the net again only to be whistled back by the referee for a 20 metre free which he tapped over the bar. Kevin O’Brien also chipped in with a point to maintain our one point advantage at the break, 1-5 to 1-4.

In the second period Youghal took control of the game, notching up a further 2-4 while we were limited to just three points, all from the stick of Hartnett on whom there is an over-dependency for scores. Paul Lane and particularly Kevin Tattan in defence cleared a lot of ball while Dan Moynihan, Kevin O’Brien and Philip O’Neill also tried hard. We now play our near neighbours Cloyne in Rostellan on Thursday, 30thJuly at 7.30 pm – a game we have to win if we are to remain in contention for a place in the final.
