Under 12s win a thriller
Rebel Óg Eastern A Hurling League Final Killeagh-Ita’s 7-10, Cloughduv 3-15 (After Extra Time)
Killeagh-Ita’s Under 12 hurlers captured the third trophy (following on the success of the Under 13s and Under 16s) of an increasingly fruitful year of underage activity by beating Cloughduv in an enthralling league final played in Ballinora on Saturday last. This was a game like Tipp v Kilkenny with scores aplenty on both sides, and the result in doubt right up to the end of normal time and the very final whistle. Cloughduv got the opening score with a point after two minutes and with the wind they dominated the first twenty five minutes after which they led by 1-8 to 1-5, with Paul Kent getting the final touch in a goalmouth scramble for our goal. Cloughduv probably could have been further ahead as they had double our tally of five wides in this first half. Ciaran O’Rourke then equalised with the first of his three goals only for it to be cancelled out almost immediately with a green flag at the other end. At the turnover Cloughduv held the advantage by 2-9 to 2-6.

Amazingly, the first 9 minutes of the second half were scoreless until Cloughduv stretched their lead to four, but then Ciaran Leahy and Ciaran O’Rourke both goaled to give us the lead for the first time on a 4-6 (18) to 2-11 (17) score-line. Back came Cloughduv with two frees to creep into a lead again with just ten minutes remaining. A Colm Treacy point levelled it and a Ben O’Connor goal gave us the lead with five remaining but with one final push Cloughduv got their third goal to level it again, 5-7 to 3-13. So extra time was required, and at this stage, in spite of substitutions from both sides, legs were tiring and scores were going to be vital. Cloughduv scored two points to our one in the first ten-minute period but we had the wind for the final ten and it proved decisive. Ben levelled it with an excellent score after great defensive work from star defender Jamie Fogarty, and then Ciaran O’Rourke’s third goal put us in the driving seat. It was still all to play for and our defence had to withstand an onslaught but in the final minute Ben added another point and goal to put a false complexion on the final score, with a seven-point winning margin. An scór deiridh: Killeagh-Ita’s 7-10, Cloughduv 3-15. Board Vice-Chairman Willie Casey presented the league trophy to captain and leader Robbie Treacy as the large Killeagh-Ita’s support cheered and the cavalcade to Main Street, Killeagh began. John Coleman’s ice-creams tasted twice as nice given the fine weather and the sweet victory! Well done to all involved – the players on the panel and the mentors Donie Treacy, Johnny Irwin, Mikey Fitzgerald and Mike Landers. Thanks to everyone who has supported this team all year, here’s to Premier 2 Under 13 in 2015!

Under 14s lose out to Courcey Rovers
Rebel Óg Eastern A Hurling League Final Courcey Rovers 1-18, Killeagh-Ita’s 1-6
Our Under 14 hurlers battled bravely against Eastern A Championship winners Courcey Rovers but were well beaten eventually in an entertaining League Final played in Nemo Rangers on Wednesday evening last. We started very well and led by 1-4 to 0-6 after 17 minutes, with Ryan McCarthy’s long shot going all the way to the net, and Olan Borderick, Padraig Leahy (2) and Ben O’Connor scoring excellent points. Our backs were doing well with Kieran Daly, Dylan Hogan and Barry Motherway clearing great ball. However, Courceys now started to dominate in the middle third, and we also conceded some silly frees, which left us 0-11 to 1-5 behind at half time. Unfortunately we returned to some bad habits in the second half with poor wides, passes going astray and dropped balls all contributing to our failure to close the gap, and a Courceys goal after 50 minutes put the game beyond us. Our boys battled all the way to the end but had to give best to a talented Courceys side. Well done boys on reaching the final, some time you will get the rewards!
Team: Robbie Treacy, Darragh Geary, Dylan Hogan, Kieran Daly, Barry Motherway, Ryan McCarthy (1-0), Richie Landers, Liam McCarthy, Adrian Galvin, Richie Long (0-1), Ben O’Connor (0-1), David Kelly, Olin Hennessy, Padraig Leahy (0-2), Olan Broderick (0-2). Subs used: Robert Sinclair, Danny Cunningham, Dara Motherway, James Kent, Andrew Foley.
