Hurlers finish level with Ballyhea in Kilworth

PI Hurling Championship

Castlelyons  1-12  Ballyhea  0-15

Castlelyons and Ballyhea played their eagerly awaited PIH Championship quarter final match in Kilworth on Saturday night. On a dry bright evening pitch conditions were excellent and both teams served up a fine match where a draw was seen by many as a fair result. Castlelyons started brightly and ,even though we were playing against a strong breeze, we dominated possession and the match for the first 25 mins. A Spillane had our first score when he pointed a free and with further points from A Fenton, E Maye, and A Spillane we led by 05 to 02 after 10 mins. C Spillane got in for a goal after 15 mins following good work by A Fenton and S Moroney and with C Barry,B O Connell and L Sexton sweeping up every ball in the back line we were dominating in all parts of the pitch. C Spillane ,A Fenton and P Mahon added 3 points but the concession of 3 late points to Ballyhea left the score 1-08 to 0-07 at half time. A Spillane had our first point of the second half from a free after 5 mins but we did not score again for the next 20 min in which time Ballyhea added 6 points to take a 1 point lead with 5 mins left to play. S O Sullivan made 2 fantastic saves in this period to deny Ballyhea a match winning goal and with our backs getting to grips with their opponents we were able to get more ball into the forward line. S Moroney won a great ball from T Carroll and turned his man to score a great point to level the match and when C O Leary broke out of defense and scored a monster point from his own half we were 1 point up heading into added time. Ballyhea replied immediately with a point to level the match again and when they added another we felt the game slipping from us. However the referee allowed one more play and a long ball out of defense was won in the air by A Fenton and he slotted it over the bar for the equalising point and sent the match to a replay that both teams deserved. A great performance by everyone involved and the aim now is to play like we did in the first half for a full 60 mins and to avoid any lull in work rate or intensity. The replay will go ahead again in Kilworth on Sun 14th Sept. @ 3.30 pm.

JB Hurling Championship

Castlelyons 3-13  Carrinnavar  1-03

Castlelyons played Round 3 of the East Cork JB Hurling championship on Sunday last when we played Carrignavar in Rathcormac. As the score line suggests we dominated this match from the start and ran our easy winners. J Barry had our first score when he goaled in the first minute and with points from M Spillane, T McCarthy and R Feeney we were ahead by 1-03 after 10 mins. R Fenton worked hard to get in for a goal after 15 mins and with further points from M Spillane, B O Donovan, and R Feeney we led by 2-07 to 0-02. Just before half time D Sexton cleared a ball out of defense which was won in the air by B O Donovan who in turn sent a great ball into C Cotter who finished it to the net for a great team goal to lead at half time by 3-07 to 0-02.
Second half was a slow affair with both teams cancelling each other out and a lot of chances going amiss.R Feeney and T McCarthy both scored points in the first 10 mins and points from R Fenton, J Barry, C O Connell and C Cotter saw Castlelyons close out the match and win on a score of 3-13 to 1-03. A good performance by all involved considering they lost some players to the Intermediate team the previous day and a few more players out injured. Next round is against Youghal on Sunday next and with a full squad we all look forward to this match with confidence.
Team :E Barry, L Moroney, M Murphy, K Kenny, S Fenton, D Sexton, S Cotter, R Feeney(0-03  2f), D Tobin, R Fenton (1-01), T McCarthy (0-02), M Spillane (0-03  1f), B O Donovan (0-01), J Barry (1-01), C Cotter (1-01).
