County J B Football Final

Castlelyons are County JB Football champions after a tight hard fought match against Kilmeen last Sunday. We began this championship in May when we defeated Kilmeen in the first round and with victories over Doneraile ,Rathpeacon and Grange we again faced Kilmeen in the final. We last won this title in 1989 when we defeated Whitechurch so this victory is  great for the moral of everyone involved in the club. Well done to everyone involved and hopefully we can go on and win more silverware before the year is out.

Castlelyons  1-06  Kilmeen  0-07

Castlelyons played Kilmeen in the County JB Football Final on Sunday last in Pairc Ui Rinn. On a wet day with a greasy surface this mitigated against fast open football and resulted in a very even contest with a limited number of scoring chances for both sides. Castlelyons had the first score of the match when T McCarthy got on the end of a long pass and he fisted the ball over the bar. Kilmeen leveled the match shortly after and went ahead when they scored their second point after 10 mins. The rest of the half was very even with both defenses on top and scoring opportunities were limited. Castlelyons added 2 more points , both scored by A Fenton, to go in at half time 1 point behind on a score of 0-03 to 0-04.
The second half was a copy of the first with very few scoring opportunities created by both sides. Kilmeen got the first point of the half to extend their lead to 2 points but R Bransfield replied for Castlelyons with a point from a free. Kilmeen scored 2 frees in a 5 min spell to go 3 points ahead and looked as if they would hold out to win.S Hickey made 2 fantastic saves to deny Kilmeen before A Spillane reduced the gap to 2 points with 10 mins left .The scores stayed at this until the 60 min when a high ball was played in by Castlelyons and all the Kilmeen defenders went for it but the ball broke over them to A Fenton who finished it to the net for a well taken goal. We were now 1 point ahead and with time almost up R Feeney scored the insurance point when he fisted the ball over the bar to insure a memorable victory.
Well done to all concerned players ,management and selectors on securing our first county football title in 25 years.

PI Hurling

This Saturday our PI Hurling team are back in  action when we play Ballyhea in the quarter final of the PI Hurling championship in Kilworth. We won our first round match against Watergrasshill on the 1st June and because we received a bye in the 4th round it has been all of 3 months since our last championship match. This team has been active all summer with league and challenge matches and numerous training sessions under coach J Boylan. Their preparation for this match has been hindered by other matches that had to be played but with the boost of the football victory and a solid weeks hurling training the lads will be ready for the challenged of Ballyhea. Best of luck to all involved players ,management and selectors so please come out and support the lads in Kilworth on Saturday @ 6.30 pm.

Our J B Hurling team are playing the next round of their championship on Sun 31th  @ 6.30 when they take on Carrignavar in Rathcormac. Having secured a great victory over Ballinacurra ,after a replay in the first round, this team are eagerly looking forward to this match and to keeping their run going. Again best of luck to all involved and your support on the night is requested.
