Junior ‘A’ Hurling Championship Quarter-Final

Lisgoold 1-10 (13)
Sarsfields 3-21 (30)
At Caherlag
28th July 2013

It was the end of the road for our junior hurlers as they were outclassed by a classy Sarsfields team. For the first half, this was a great battle as Lisgoold fought tooth and nail but ultimately failed to a slicker Sars team. Sars got off to a lighting start with their forwards in exceptional form and raced into a three point lead. Moss Connell and John Cashman rose to the fore and responded with a couple of points of their own and it was game on. We seemed to be flying especially with the fact we went with them toe to toe and after a couple of wonderful goal-line clearances and saves by Ciarán one wondered was this going to be our night. It looked very good as John Cronin hit in a long ball which was squeezed through by Denis O’Brien after Eoin O’Sullivan raised a green flag for Sarsfields. We trooped off 1-7 to 1-3 behind, but with a bit of positivity.

In the second half, it turned into a Demolition job, as Sars got the ideal start with a goal and this ensured a flood of scores, as we were constantly raided throughout the second half. Sars short passing tactic was causing problems as they began to pull away. Denis O’Brien, Johnathon O’Shea, John Cronin, and Ciaran Cronin were holding well but it wasn’t enough to stem the blue tide as Sars just simply ran riot. It was easy for them, to be honest and even though Moss and John added some wonderful points it was nowhere near good enough to catch Sarsfields who are through to the semi-finals against Castlemartyr.

It was a disappointing outcome for us; but the pressure Sars kept us under throughout the second half took its toll. So, our dreams have died to capture Jamsey Kelleher until 2015 we still have a league semi-final to play in the Division one hurling as well we are in a great position to win the division one football and one does hope that our squad can pick themselves up and take this opportunity to get some silverware for 2014.

Under 16 ‘B’ Hurling Semi-final
Lisgoold 3-11 (20)
Mayfield 2-12 (18)
At Mayfield
Mon 28th July 2014

Last Monday night before our Juniors played their quarter-final encounter, our under 16 squad took on the challenge of Mayfield in the Semi-final of the east region championship. Played in a lovely Mayfield venue, the reasonably sized crowd we were treated to an exhibition of hurling from both sides. The first half overall was a tough battle as both sides refused to give an inch. Liam O’Shea, Kieran Cashman, Rian Hogan, Sean Nagle & Sean Whelan played very well; however both defences were on top as scores were hard to comeby. Every score was hard earned and at the short-whistle it was 0-8 apiece.

The second half saw crowd treated to a splendid contest in which both sides played very attacking hurling producing five goals, with us getting three. A switch by management by moving Jason Hegarty into full forward produced two green flags which was crucial to the match, Rian got our third and Liam was consistent throughout (also scored a wonderful side-line cut) which inspired all around him. It was nip and tuck and we just about held out to win by two. It was a good performance all round and let’s hope they can re-produce this for the next stage.

Next up is Watergasshill or Ballygarvan in the final with a date and venue to be decided.

All in C.L.G Liosgcúl were saddened to hear the passing of Matty Riordan. An excellent club member and player, he was also heavily involved in the purchasing of Pairc Liosgcúl and the club will be forever grateful for his contribution that he made to this proud club. Our condolences go to his family and large circle of friends. Ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh a anam dhílis.
