Under 21 B Hurling Championship First Round
Castlegoold 3-20 (29)
Carrignavar 3-16 (25)
At Rathcormac
Mon 21st July 2014

Last Monday night our under 21 squad took on the challenge of Carrignavar in the first round of the east cork championship. Played in a lovely Rathcormac venue we were treated to an exhibition of hurling from both sides, although the match (especially the first half) was riddled with frees – it wasn’t really a dirty game. The first half overall was a shootout between Forde of Carrignavar and Cashman of Castlegoold as both players demonstrated their free taking ability. Both defences though did play very well. Joe O’Donnell, Colm Cooney for Carrignavar, whilst Eoin Ronayne, Cian Hayes and Andrew Donovan steeped up to the plate for Castlegoold. At the short-whistle it was 0-11 to 0-8 to Carrignavar.

The second half saw the reasonably sized crowd treated to a splendid contest in which both sides gained three goals each. Ours coming from a wonderful solo effort by Cashman, the second a well-taken goal by Colm Beasuang and our last one a cracker from Brendan Flynn. With James Lawton, Ciaran O’Shea & Jamie Stack adding to the scoreline as well working together as a team ensured that we were going through to the quarter-final. The only blot on our copybook was the dismissal of our centre back Cathal Cashman for two yellows, apart from that a good performance all round and let’s hope they can re-produce this for the next stage.

Next up is Carrigtwohill in the quarter-final with a date and venue to be decided.

Team: Bill Whelan, Killian Abernethy, Eoin Ronayne, Andrew Donovan, Cian Hayes, Cathal Cashman, Brendan O’Flynn, James Lawton, Jamie Stack, Ciaran O’Shea, Liam Martin, Colm Beausang, Declan Kelly, John Cashman, Caoimhán O’Shea.

Subs Used: Cian Scannell

Scorers: John Cashman 1-13 (0-9f, 0-1 65), Colm Beausang 1-2, Brendan Flynn 1-0, James Lawton, Jamie Stack, Ciaran O’Shea, Liam Martin & Declan Kelly 0-1 each.

Referee: Dominic Rooney (Carrigtwohill)

At Shanagarry
Sat 19th July 2014

Our final league game of the campaign was billed as a ‘league quarter-final’, as the winner (barring a draw) would be put through as the group runner-up and into the league semi-finals, which was set-up to be played against Dungourney. Our management felt that since we were minus a few regulars, to give it youth its fling and decided to gamble. It worked a treat as another two points were gained in a very entertaining affair in Shanagarry. A good team performance from our lads even though we were hampered due to injuries and work commitments saw it out in dry and warm conditions, where the visitors recorded a solid win over the hour. We had a great start to the match. This was coupled with Finbarr, Andrew, Brendan, Kevin and Coamihán stepping up to the mark, against a vibrant and youthful rovers team ensured a good hours work. Let’s just hope the lads can built from this win and create some kind of form for next week. It was a good performance and with Sarsfields coming up next week, we just have to get keep this momentum going and take the challenge head on. I ask all our patrons to get behind the lads, as a club we must make sure they all our support as they bid to make their way to the semi-final.
