Junior A Hurling Championship Third Round

Erins Own 0-13 (13)

13th July 2014

It was a dogged, tough hours hurling in the seaside venue last Saturday which saw our men advance to the next round of the championship. However, we were up against it from the start as the Caherlag boys started the better as Alan Bowen set the pace scoring two points before we saw Shane Horgan put Erin's Own three ahead. Maurice O'Connell opened the scoring for us after the seventh minute. James O'Carroll and Sean Crowley extended Erin's Own lead as we were trailing 0-5 to 0-1in the opening quarter. They had a few goal chances but thanks to Peter, Eoin, Jer and our goalie Ciarán we kept them at bay. Then John Cashman started to take over the game landing three great scores to reel in Erins Own. On the 20th minute mark Bowen and Denis O'Brien exchanged points (Denis’s a wonderful point from play) after this the hurling got tough and hard. Erins Own added another free before Moss despite missing the first strike at the ball, hit a wonderful side-line cut to the delight of the large Lisgoold following. John Cashman had us level for the first time but as the short whistle approached Cathal Heavy put Erin's Own 0-9 to 0-8 ahead and we went in for the half-time jaffa one down and against the wind for the second half.

We started the second half with a bang with John Cashman levelling the game from the thrown in but minutes later Bowen answered for Erin's Own. Lisgoold were slowing getting on top but an excellent save by the Erins Own keeper Paul Ryan from John Cronin seemed to have turned the tide as Bowen from a placed ball, sub Kieran Moynihan and James O’Carroll rattled over three on the trot as we entered the final fifteen minutes three behind (0-12 to 0-9). However sport tends to reveal character and one would admit that a Lisgoold team in the past would have cracked under this pressure but the class of 2014 have shown a new kind of steel. Patrick O’Mahony, John Cronin (who was switched to centre-back), Peter Leahy and Subs Alan and Jonathon demonstrated a new found hunger in this squad. Coupled with these lads on form we were treated to a great display by John Cashman who began to reel in the Caherlag side once more, with some great scores. We got a deserved equaliser on the 54th minute before Cashie had us ahead for the first time at the 57th minute. Bowen levelled the game again from a placed ball only for Cashie to reply as time ran out. Hearts were in our mouths as Bowen had a chance to level from a placed ball in injury time but it went inches wide. Two more minutes were played when the reiteoir blew his whistle and to the jubilation of the crowd (and by the management) Lisgoold we through to a Quarter-final clash against Sars in about two weeks’ time.

In truth, it was a very hard game to get through but a great win to get. However, one must note that we were slightly fortuitous to win as the wide count was sixteen to six in favour of the Caherlag men. However it’s the score board that counts and we will advance to the quarter-finals. It was a steely performance and with Sarsfields coming up in the next week or so. We just have to get keep this momentum going and take the challenge head on, as a club we must make sure we all get behind them as they attempt to make a second semi-final apperance.
