Junior B Hurling Championship.
The first round of the Junior B hurling championship took place in Shanagarry on Wednesday last against Fr O’Neills.Fielding a very experienced team mixed with a number of young players expectations of a win were high but were dashed by a young skilful O’Neill’s team.
The first half was to ultimately prove our downfall with a very lethargic display saw us behind by 10 points at the break 2.09 to 5 pts.
Fr O’Neill’s started the brightest racing into a 3 point lead before a John Cotter free opened our account, 2 quick O’Neill’s goals either side of a Mike Naughton pointed free saw us in deep trouble. A few positional and personnel changes had the desired effect and we began to get a foothold in the game with points from play from Cian Motherway and David Ring. Some unnecessary fouling though enable O’Neill’s to tag on points from frees and they finished the half with 3 points from play to build up the commanding 10 point half time lead.
With wind advantage in the second half we set about reducing the deficit and started the half well with 4 David Ring points from frees,2 O’Neill’s points from play and a free slowed our momentum somewhat but when 2 more David Ring frees was added to by a David Jermyn goal we were right back in the game.
We began to monopolise possession around the middle third with James Nyhan showing his experience when he added 2 excellent points from play.A further David Ring pointed free and a Cian point from play had the margin down to a point entering the last 10 minutes.
A fabulous pointed sideline cut by Fr O’Neill’s lifted the siege and a further James Nyhan point from play had the margin down to one again, crucially despite numerous attacks we couldn’t get the equalizing score and a point from play by Fr O’Neill’s brought the curtain down on a 2 point defeat 2.13 to 1.14.
While the second half display was encouraging we left ourselves with too much to do after a very substandard first half display.
