U-16s get winning start in championship
Rebel Óg Premier 2 Fé 16 Hurling Championship Killeagh-Ita’s 1-17, Ballinahassig 1-12
Killeagh-Ita’s Under 16 hurlers made hard work of beating a strong and spirited Ballinahassig side in the preliminary round of the Rebel Óg Premier 2 Fé 16 Hurling Championship in Kilbarry last Friday evening. On a perfect evening and a fine pitch, conditions were good for hurling. Ballinahassig, playing against the wind, got a dream start with a goal after three minutes, while our forwards were a bit wasteful in the first few minutes. Kevin Murphy and Cathal Deane pointed frees to settle the nerves, and when Andrew Leahy goaled from a 20 metre free after 17 minutes, it gave our boys a 1-6 to 1-2 lead. We made full use of the wind advantage for the remainder of the half, with Andrew and Kevin continuing to score, and Shane Kearney and Eoin Fitzgibbon getting nice points from the wings. In defence our corner backs Daniel Hickey and Dylan Hogan were clearing good ball, while Cathal and Emmet Barron were busy in midfield. At half time it was 1-13 to 1-4 and our boys looked to be well in control. However, a point by Andrew Leahy in the 34th minute (his sixth, scoring freely off his left and right) was to be our last score for a full twenty minutes, as Ballinahassig took control and scored six points without reply to leave just three points between the teams (1-14 to 1-11) with just six minutes remaining. A point by sub Padraig Leahy steadied the ship, and two frees from Kevin, with just one point in reply from Ballinahassig, gave us a 1-17 to 1-12 victory at the final whistle. While it was good to get the win, our mentors will probably not be too happy with much of the second-half performance, so some work to be done between now and the quarter-final, which will not be for a few weeks.
Team: Aaron Walsh, Daniel Hickey, Jack O’Rourke, Dylan Hogan, Fergal Smiddy, Kevin Murphy (0-6f), Christy Coughlan, Emmet Barron, Cathal Deane (0-2f), Eoin Fitzgibbon (0-1), Andrew Leahy (1-6), Shane Kearney (0-1), Sean Walsh, David Ogbebor, Jamie Landers. Subs: Padraig Leahy (0-1), Fionn McDonnell, Jamie Clifford.

U-13s/14s have a good workout against Douglas
Our Under 13s, strengthened by some of our Under 14 players, had a good workout against Douglas Under 13s on Thursday evening last in Páirc Uí Chinnéide, a game we won by 0-10 to 0-6. Richie Long and Richie Landers did the bulk of our scoring, while at the back Cian McDonald, Robert Sinclair and Paul Delaney defended very well. Our two goalkeepers Darragh O’Connor and Robbie Treacy both played well, while Dara Motherway played some nice passes to team-mates from centre forward. Our Under 13s play Courcey Rovers on Monday next, report to follow.
Team: Darragh O’Connor, Paul Delaney, Barry Motherway, Cian McDonald, Robert Sinclair, Padraig Leahy, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Ryan McCarthy, Adrian Galvin, Olan Broderick, Dara Motherway, Richie Long, Richie Landers, James Kent, Olin Hennessy. Subs: Owen Cosgrove, Robbie Treacy, Daniel Lucey, Tommy Noonan, Ciaran Leahy, Oisin McCarthy, Olan Coleman.
