Junior A Hurling Championship Round 1
Lisgoold 0-17 (17)
Dungourney 3-17 (26)
At Dungourney
28th June 2013

A bad result for our juniors, as they succumbed to a nine point defeat, but played in a very spirited and determined manner in glorious sunshine. We should have got an excellent start but six wides in the opening ten minutes were to prove costly. The duns thanks to Shane Hegarty, Naill Motherway & Ryan Denny shot out of the blocks. James Leahy goaled for them after 11 minutes and it looked like we were in for a long day in the office at 1-3 to 0-0. However, we still put on a good enough show with John Cronin, Peter Leahy, Cathal Cashman, Kieran Barry and Jamie Woods stepping up to the plate. In fact we were on a roll and with Johnsey in superb form aided by the accurate puck outs of Ciarán (who also got two points from frees) we clawed it back to one 1-5 to 0-7 after 21 minutes. It was tit for tat for the remainder of the half and after a super long range point from johnsey we were level 1-7 to 0-10. So good so far.

In the second half though we saw Motherway and more accurately Hegarty run riot for Dungourney. They dragged them to a three point lead before an error in our defence led to a second goal by Shane Casey. This opened a gap we could not close. The management had the team well prepared in fairness but we seemed to be always playing catch up, also a few bad calls in terms of passing to team mates was also to prove our downfall. Even though we did introduce Noel Connery (who got a fine point), Killian Kingston, Alan Conroy & Brendan Flynn we never seemed able to claw Dungourney back on level terms. The game finished with the Duns scoring 1-1 in injury time which one felt was a bit harsh on Lisgoold as they didn’t deserve to lose by a nine point margin but in truth, Dungourney did deserve to win the match and their place in the quarter-finals.

It wasn’t a bad performance and with the losers of Bride Rovers and Cobh coming up in the next fortnight or so. We just have to get some momentum going and take the challenge head on, as a club we must make sure we all get behind them.

Rebel Success

It wasn’t too bad for Johnsey as he was part of the Cork Intermediate Team that won the Munster Hurling title last Wednesday against Tipp. Well done John, they play Galway in the semi-final in a few weeks’ time.
