Junior A hurling championship
Castlemartyr 2-15 Sarsfields 1-12

Castlemartyr opened their defense of the East Cork Junior A hurling crown with a six point win again Sarsfields in Midleton on Saturday night. In a repeat of last year's final, the scoreline flattered Castlemartyr a little in the end as a fortuitous Eddie Clifford goal in the final minutes made it look much easier than it was.

The first half was a very tight affair with little separating the sides at any point. Sarsfields fielded a young side who's pace caused the Castlemartyr defense some trouble. Both teams raised a green flag in the first half. Sars struck first from close range but Mike O'Neill also goaled for Castlemartyr after fielding a high ball and turning his marker. Mike was to cause the Sars full back some trouble in the first half and also won a penalty with ended up being saved from Seanie Hennessey. Others to score for Castlemartyr in the first period were Adrian Bowens (2), Barra O'Tuama(2), Brian Lawton(2), Jimmy Smiddy(2), Eddie Clifford and Liam Martin. Castlemartyr led by a single point at the break on a score of 1-10 to 1-09.

Castlemartyr scored the first three points of the second half to open up a four point lead with Brian Lawton powering into the game. Sars kept in touch however and we're awarded a penalty of their own with four points separating the sides. However the Sars player only managed a point to leave a goal between the sides entering the final minutes. A lucky Eddie Clifford goal after a very luck bounce of the ball sealed the win for Castlemartyr who now progress into round 2 with Sars facing Erins Own in round 1 proper.

Eanna McGovern had a fine game in goal for Castlemartyr with a couple of fine saves. Adrian Bowens was his usual consistent self while also contributing to the scoreboard. Upfront Brian Lawton had four points from play and set up many more while Mike O'Neill showed that he is a great addition to the team after a number of years abroad.

Scorers for Castlemartyr: E Clifford 1-1, Brian Lawton 0-4, J Smiddy 0-4 (2f) Barra O’Tuama 0-3, M O’Neill 1-0, A Bowens 0-2(1f), L Martin 0-1.
