Scaith na Scoil Finals

Roinn H7 East
Leamlara 1-0 (3)
Cobh 3-6 (15)
At Pairc Ui Rinn
Wed 28th May 2014

A great start for Cobh (2-2 in the first three minutes) ensured they would take the honours here. However one must say that if Leamlara's talisman James O'Driscoll was fully fit and the chances Leamlara had created before Cobh hit that purple patch were taken, the result would have been much different. In fairness it was quite a close encounter apart from the start, and with the likes of Mark Hegarty, Robbie Kinane, Dan Power and Noel O’Driscoll coming to the fore, Leamlara more or less held their own. Cobh though hit a wonderful third goal at the stroke of the third whistle and the match was pretty much settled at 3-4 to 0-0. To Leamlara's credit they battled gamely in the second half and were reward with a goal but it was too little too late. The start they craved for was got by the Cobh school and effectively this decided the game, in this type of competition a good start is half the battle. To be fair they had drawn earlier on in the competition with their opponents so the result is not a fair reflection on how good this bunch of players really are. However Leamlara should be very delighted with their efforts, as it just wasn’t their day. They have done the parish, club and more importantly their parents proud. Head up lads, we are very proud of ye.

Ballincurrig 4-3 (15)
Ballintotas 2-8 (14)
At Pairc Ui Choiamh
Thurs 29th May 2014

Such was the crowd that arrived at this encounter that match was delayed by twenty minutes!! When the stewards eventually had everything settled down, a thriller was played here. In which we saw Ballincurrig secure their first ever hurling title. In a superb contest that ebbed and flowed throughout the tie. Ballintotas led superbly by Ellen Hayes & Conor Fitzgerald raced into a two point lead early on but an fantastic solo effort by Captain Declan O'Brien saw the Bally boys raise a green flag. Ballintotas replied with two more points before Stephen Roe and Declan secured two minors to take the lead. Parents from both sides were thrilled with the spectacle as goal chances aplenty were being created but not taken by both teams. When the short whistle blew (for the half-time jaffa) it was 1-2 to 0-4 to Ballincurrig.

At the resumption the game took off at a mighty pace, Ballintotas rocked into the lead with scoring 1-1 and it would be feeling that the tie was slipping away from Ballincurrig, however there is a dogged spirit within this team and up stepped Diarmuid ward who was at the end of a wonderful team goal with eight minutes left to make it level (2-2 to 1-5). Ballintotas drew ahead with a minor before Ward struck again with a minor. However a marvellous goal by the Castlemartyr based school followed quickly by a point, which opened a four point gap.

With three minutes to go, it looked like Ballincurrig’s chance was gone but Ward popped up with another goal to raise hope, Ballintotas rose the white flag again and entering injury time they led by two points. Historically in GAA though, two points is an awful lead to have, especially in hurling. This proved to be the case as Ballincurrig were throwing the kitchen sink at our opponents - who were holding out well in extreme pressure. Luke Walsh lashed one last final high ball in hope of rescuing the game, which dropped into the net to the jubilation of the Ballincurrig following. Seconds later, the final whistle blew and Ballincurrig were champions. It was a fantastic game and one could feel sorry for Ballintotas who played their hearts out but were caught by that late goal. It was a fantastic occasion and well done to the bally boys on securing a famous win, which was celebrated by young and old later on in the day.

JHL Division 1
Lisgoold 0-23 (23)
Churchtown 0-12 (12)

Another two points were gained in a very lack-lustre affair in paric liosgcul. A good performamce from our team even though we were hampered due to injuries and work commitments saw it out in dry and warm conditions, where the hosts recorded a solid win over the hour. It was a good performance by us, against a vibrant churchtown team, although our performance was way off the mark for championship it is a step in the right direction. Best for lisgoold were Andrew Donovan, Patrick O’Mahony & Conor Walsh. Let’s just hope the lads can built from this win and create some kind of form for championship.
