Hurling Championship Win

PI Hurling Championship

Castlelyons 2-12  Watergrasshill  0-12

Castlelyons and Watergrasshill played out an exciting PI Hurling Championship match in Rathcormac on last Sunday afternoon. This being a local derby and with both sides knowing one another very well it was never going to be a free flowing game. Watergrasshill had the advantage of the wind in the first half but Castlelyons were first to score when Anthony Spillane pointed in the first minute. Watergrasshill scored two quick points to take the lead after 5 mins , the only time they lead in the match, and when Ciaran McGann pointed a 65 after 10 mins the teams were level again. Colm Barry who was very prominent at midfield scored 2 super long range points to extend our lead but Watergrasshill with 2 points of their own leveled the match . Anthony Spillane with 3 frees in the last 10 mins completed our scoring to leave Castlelyons leading at halftime 0-07 to 0-06. The first half was a tense edgy affair with both defenses dominating and scoring chances were few.

Castlelyons ,with the advantage of the wind in the second half, started very brightly and had the first 3 points of the half from Anthony Spillane (free)  Ronan Bransfield and Barry Fitzgerald to extend our lead. Watergrasshill came more into the game and scored 4 points in a row to level the match after 15 mins. Ronan Bransfield put us back in front with a great point from the left sideline only for Watergrasshill to level it with a point of their own. Leo Sexton put over a great score to put us ahead again with 10 mins to go and at this stage the match was on a knife edge and could go either way. Tom Carroll and Aidan O Sullivan combined to clear a great ball out of defense that landed on the Watergrasshill goalkeeper who under pressure from Ronan O Regan and Alan Fenton ( who had just come on the field) failed to hold the ball and it broke out to Alan Fenton who first timed the ball to the net for the first goal of the game and a 3 point lead for Castlelyons. Watergrasshill pilled on the pressure to try and level the match but Ronan Bransfield cleared a long ball which Alan Fenton won and rounded the defender and finished to the net for a very well taken goal. That was the last score of a pulsating half and Castlelyons won on a score of 2-12 to 0-12.

Congratulations to the management and team on a good all round performance  and considering all our injury problems and lack of form leading into the match it was great to get the win which was very important for the team as it guarantees Premier Intermediate status for next year but leaves plenty to work on before the next round which wont be played for another 7/8  weeks.
