Deel Rovers  0-11   Russell Rovers  1-7

Our footballers bowed out of the county Junior B championship when they lost by the narrowest of margins to Deel Rovers in sun-drenched Ballyhooly last Saturday evening. This was a most disappointing defeat as the Milford side secured victory deep into injury time with virtually the last kick of the game when extra time appeared to be on the cards.
Playing with the aid of a slight breeze in the opening half, we went 0-4 to 0-2 ahead after 15 minutes of play but ended the half a point behind, 0-6 to 0-5, with John Paul Ivers showing great leadership in scoring 4 points from play and frees, along with a Derek Crowley point.
As the second half progressed, the more the game appeared to be slipping away from us with the deficit increasing to 4 points after 20 minutes of play. Our only score in this period was a converted free by JP Ivers which was won by the hard-working Michael Furlong. Urged on by Eoin and Tom on the sideline, this committed bunch of players displayed great character and resilience to force their way back into the game as we entered the final ten minutes. Driving runs forward by Anthony Archer, Ricky Walsh, Eoin McGrath and Paul Lane were rewarded with a peach of a goal by Furlong and then with normal time running out Kevin Ivers released McGrath who split the posts for a superb point to level the match. As the game moved into stoppage time, we created one more chance to snatch victory but the shot dropped agonisingly short into the goalkeeper’s hands. In the 4th minute of injury time Deel Rovers worked the ball down field for the winning point, followed immediately by the final whistle which was a cruel way for our lads to lose the game.
While this was a very disappointing defeat for both the team and management, what was equally disappointing was the lack of support, particularly by club members, as well as a number of player defections. The number of supporters present on our side could be counted on the fingers of one hand – a sad reflection on the club it must be said.
Team: Shane Casey; Aidan Beausang, David Whelehan, Brian Crowley; Eoin McGrath, Anthony Archer, Ricky Walsh; Paul Lane, John Paul Ivers; Barry Fitzgerald, Derek Crowley, Kevin Ivers; Alan Cott, Daniel O’Brien, Chris Scanlon.
Subs: Michael Furlong, Seamus Kearney, Brandon Keohane.

By the time this goes to press we will have played Churchtown (Mallow) in Round 7 of the Imokilly/Avondhu JHL on the Bank Holiday Monday, hopefully with a positive result. Our next game in this league is away to Ballyhea next Sunday, 8th at 12 noon.
