Glanmire News

Glanmire Junior footballers achieved another victory in the East Cork junior football league on Thurs 29th May in Sallybrook against Ballinacurra. After a delayed start Glanmire were first on the score board with a point from team Captain Kevin O Rourke and was followed up 2 mins later with a well taken point from Ronan Organ. The scores were level at 2 points each when on 5 mins a well worked goal from Thomas Drinan was crashed to the net after some good approach work from Organ.

Ballinacurra responded admirably with 2 Pts of their own but were sent reeling when O Rourke notched 2 goals in the space of a minute and when this was followed up by a pt from Daire McCarthy two mins later Glanmire seemed set for a comfortable victory.

It must be said that this lead came despite the fact that Ballinacurra were dominating the midfield exchanges due to their physical superiority in this sector and their willingness to scrap for the breaking ball. After Ballinacurra responded with a point of their own, another good move from Glanmire resulted with a goal from Darragh O Rourke in the 15th minute and followed up 2 mins later with a point from Mccarthy to push the score to 4-4 to 0-5 in favour of Glanmire and a seemingly unassailable lead. However some sloppy play on Glanmire's behalf resulted in some needless turnovers and allowed the opposition to get back into the game whereupon they scored two goals and 3 Pts in the remainder of the half to leave only 4 Pts between the sides on the score 4-6 to 2-8 at half time.

Daire Mccarthy increased the lead in the 2nd min after the break with Drinan adding another in the 9th min and Darragh O Rourke adding a minor in the 9th minute. At  this stage substitutes Edward Gaffey and Eoin Murphy,at full back and centre back respectively, were making their presence felt and indeed on 10 mins Murphy scored a peach of a goal when his deceiving shot found the net after he had weaved his way past a plethora of flailing defenders.Again, however, Glanmire took to their slumbers and lacking composure when in attacking positions gave away too much possession which the fast breaking Ballinacurra side exploited and picked off some well taken points.Organ, now operating at midfield, lifted the siege with a well taken point despite being tackled vigorously and Drinan chipped in with a point to seal up the Game.
This was a bit of a Jeckyl and Hyde performance from Glanmire mixing the sublime with the ridiculous but nevertheless a score of 5-11 had much to be applauded despite some lapses in concentration that allowed the opposition to score 2-16.
