Russell Rovers 2-12 Clyda Rovers 0-7
Our Junior hurlers picked up another brace of League points with a well-earned win over Clyda Rovers in Mourneabbey on Sunday last in Round 4 of the Avondhu Imokilly JHL.  While the home side had the opening point in the third minute it was quickly answered in dramatic fashion when Derek connected with a pass on the 20-metre line and flicked left-handed past the keeper for a goal. Jack McGrath added a point shortly afterwards and Aidan Beausang was on hand in the 12th minute to finish off to the net after a  goalmouth scramble. The Rovers dominance was led by an in form half-back trio of Dan Moynihan, John Paul Ivers and Paul Lane while midfielders Brian Crowley and Kieran Walsh were also very effective in setting up attacks. Three more points on the trot from Moynihan, Smiddy and McGrath saw us in a commanding 2-4 to 0-1 lead before the home side got their second point in the 20th minute. Brian Whelehan had the first of three fine points in the 23rd and a Smiddy placed ball put us in a strong position at half-time, leading by 2-6 to 0-3.
As expected, the home side upped their game at the start of the second half and were rewarded with two points as our lads took the foot off the pedal somewhat. Ten minutes into the half substitutes Eoin McGrath and Chris Ruddy were brought on, replacing Daniel O’Brien and Brian Crowley, while Kevin Moynihan and Seamus Kearney replaced Aidan Beausang and Derek Crowley late in the game. Jack McGrath tacked on another point in the 44th minute to be followed by two converted frees from Smiddy and while pressure from Clyda resulted in two points from the home side, Rovers finished strongly with three unanswered points from Brian Whelehan (2 ) and  Ian Smiddy. Goalkeeper Joseph Walsh was called on to make a number of clearances in both halves and with the goal in a very muddy condition after the heavy rain the previous night he needed all his skill to keep a clean sheet.  He was well supported by the full-back trio of Anthony Archer, Kevin Ivers and David Whelehan. The standard of the overall play continues to improve from this team with intelligent passing movements, good support play and better shooting as evidenced from the fact that 2-9 of the total came from play despite a tricky cross-field wind. There will, no doubt, be sterner tests to come but three wins out of four is not a bad start at all. The game was well handled by Referee John O’Leary, Mallow.
